I tested both games with my ethernet unplugged. They both had offline modes and started up without an initial internet connection. Loaded an AC2 save game, works flawlessly.

That still does not mean I will buy either game. Ubi will no longer get any more money from me unless they change their ways and business practices.

They did, since the 2nd AC 2 patch iirc, Conviction always worked without a permanent connection, at least for me, but of course, when you have a connection, they will make use of it, to register and upload your saves and achievements.
