noob questions on hard drive

how do u format it on a brand new computer because im trying to set up windows xp and it says i do not have a hard drive installed in the setup process and i know u look in the bios but i dont know where to see where it is listed as downloaded

XP should format and partition your drives by itself as part of the standard set up process.  Make sure that in the bios you boot from the CD not the hard drives first and the CD should take over.  After instillation make sure to put it back to booting from the Hard drives first.  If your computer can't find your hard drives make sure they are pluged in right and make sure they have power (two cables should run into each hard drive; one for power, one for data).  Its hard to say what the exxact problem is without more info: if you have tried these or do try these but they dont work - post back with as specific dietails as possible.
