if you have an nvidia card river tuner will allow you make resolutions. i know 1280x1024 is a widescreen res (because im on that now) the native res for 20-22" is 1680x1050 (sorry for the bold i accidently changed it and dont knowhow to change it back)

Have you set the desktop res to be 1680x1050 if so then it would be worth looking in the monitor menus to see if you can reset it.

1280x1024 is not a widescreen resolution by the way;-)

Hmmm, try reinstalling the plug and play driver for your monitor just in case it thinks the old screen is still attached. Failing that reinstall the NVidia driver and see if that has any effect.

1280x1024 is not widescreen. In fact, it's just the opposite--it's a 5:4 aspect resolution, which is less wide than normal 4:3 aspect resolutions, i.e. 1280x960 or 1024x768.

Are you using XP or Vista? What about unistalling the GFX drivers all together and starting again?

I didn't say reinstall i said unintsall, revert back to the default GFX driver in Vista and see if it lets you pick the correct res. Have you tried the screen on another PC or laptop to see if that allows you to select the correct res?

With no video card driver installed, it's normal it doesn't let you. Is the monitor properly recognized by windows (does ist name appear in themonitor settings?)

That's the problem. Windows doesn't recognize the monitor and doesn't know which resolutions are supported so doesn't give you the option. Try to find the drivers for your monitor or select a similar monitor from the list.
