Should I build a PC now with current technology or wait for Corei7 (which should come out this quarter I believe)?

There were some early reports i thought, that the first i7 procs launching in Nov. weren't any better as far as gaming. It still might be better to wait until they launch as hopefully it will drop prices on the old platform.

Even though the Core i7 chips are going to perform similarly to current high-end processors, it would be pointless to base a whole new system on a motherboard with a socket that is about to be discontinued. If you can't wait for Nehalem, go AMD and get an AM2+ socket.

Not exactly pointless. The new motherboards and chips are going to be expensive. If you are building now, or in the near future, theres no reason to not still go socket 775, if you don't want to break the bank. Socket 775 is still better than AM2+.

So the consensus is a, "wait-and-see" approach?

The new architecture is still untested I guess.

Nehalem under 3.8ghz @ = 100% Sure to be 35-40% slower then Pneonm 9950 BE AT 3.0ghz which is a huge failure
a epic fail for gamer appeal but even intel said they didn't seek gamer appeal or so but people still gonna buy it and be deceived else they wouldn't be already Tri-channel memory kit & after market cooler for nehalem
it a wait and see if nehalem doesn't get better with several Revision we have to wait westmere & sandy Brdige gamers
why go back to slower performances it not logic. i was really shock to see the pre-benchmark it was not appealing at all
i first tough wow 8 core will surelly pwn 2 core. at such high frequacny 2.6 / 2.9 / 3,1GHZ but all wrong. all wrong !

The link from Hexus got removed but luckily i was able to take a screenshot of the benchmark when i brought the news ;)

source: Nehalem gaming performance.

Scroll more to the right to see the Phenom numbers.

Also that was the first Nehalem benchmark that got leaked on the internet.

Compare it will the Nehalem Full Review, and the QX9770 @ 3.2 vs core i7 @ 3.2 (OC'ed) are pretty spot on.

And Hexus is a respected source.

i think we should wait for some real test on real motherboards like asus, gigabyte and even msi eclipse which it looks very good and get our info from more than 1 website to give us a solid review if its good or not .

You could wait but if you go on waiting forever you'll never upgrade your pc.

You do realize that the Nehalem/Core i7 test platform they had showed several "missing driver" instances in the Device Manager? The platform clearly wasn't finalized at the time. Wait until there's a set of finished, ready-to-market products to judge it, okay? You just might be pleasantly surprised. Also, for those of you wondering what he's mentioning here, he's talking about The Custom-Built PC Union, of which I am also a member.

I do not have a gaming PC now, which is making this decision difficult.

Get a high end Dual Core and be happy that you can run most, if not all games at high.
