I have the following error when trying to boot into windows xp:

Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)

NTLDR: Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)

I know this error is common when reformatting or installing a new OS, but I already had XP installed for awhile. I was posting on the forums, when the xp suddenly closes to the desktop, then goes to black. I try to reboot, and then I get the error. It reads th HD in the BIOS, so I don't think it is bad. I tried switching the SATA cable to a different slot and got nothing. I tried running Recovery Console from the xp disk, but it crashed to blue screen when it's about to load. I plugged in my old, dying HD, and it boots on that one.

So what are my options here? This HD is less than a yr old, so like I said, I don't think it is bad. The thing I'm really confused at is how and when the error occurred....at random, while posting on a forum. Thanks in advance to all who help.

Have you tried to reinstall? If you want to backup files, try booting from a Linux Live cd, like Ubuntu and then backup your files. Then try reformatting, if reformatting doesn't work in the XP disc, just format the disk with gparted, it's included in the ubuntu live cd. Then try installing it... should work, if not, HD is toast.

I don't think the HDD is toast, I think its just missing/corrupted MBR. Try a repair install.

ok, if your talking about doing a repair install from the xp cd, I can't. Everytime the xp disk loads up all the software and is just about to load the actual program, it crashes to blue screen. If there is another type of repair install, let me know. I used Acronis Disk Doctor to to try and f0rmat C: drive, and it crashes with an error also. I did get it to load in safe mode, and all my partitions were in tact. I f0rmatted C: drive, reboot, and xp disk still crashes. Like I said, Acronis still recognizes the HD, and so does my mobo.
