im not sure how this is compared to 9600gt 512 mb . but i can run al games maxed at 1024x768 except crysis .

The 9600GT is kind of a mix between the 8600GT and the 9800GT. The 8600GT card was a low-end GPU from the 8 series for gaming, geared more towards the casual gamers. It'll work, but it's not really that great of a GPU if you plan on playing more recent games that work best on 8800GT or better cards. I guess it all just depends on what resolution you play at and what games you want to play.
I suggest you better don't buy this card for year 2009. GPUs that are better than the 8600GT is Nvidia 9500GT, 9600GSO, 9600GT and 9800GT (9-series) ATI HD4830, HD4850 ( I suggest this two,I think the HD4830 is better than the 9800GT)
