Hi, im messing around with my graphics card a little, and knowing my luck I dont wanna mess it up or anything so im gna ask a few n00b questions. First, i've cranked it up from about 30% to 45%, in order to lower the temp a bit more, but it hasnt made much difference. I was wondering because there are 2 settings, direct control and auto control in the Rivatuner settings. Im using direct control at the moment, does that mean fans will not speed up anymore? Is that unsafe? Also any suggestions whether i should leave it at default or what ever? I mean even after playing cs 1.6 i think the graphics card can heat up quite a bit, plus there is little ventilation for the pc. Sorry 4 soo many questions, answer how many u feel like lol :P.

i tried to use rivatuner for fan control and found it bleh. EVGAprecision is totally free and very very simple. my advice to you, when you are about to play a game, increase the fan speed to 100%, and when you finish, let it cool for a minute or two, then return to default speed.

Switching the fan speed to 100% can lower the lifespan of the fan (not to mention the added sound levels). Seriously.. there's nothing wrong with leaving the fan speed on auto.

Download Nvidia system tools http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_system_tools_6.05.html, and watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ1xatX3X4k . To setup the fan speed to go up with temps.

when the fan was on auto, my gpu temps would cross the 80C barrier. this is something i absolutely wont allow. now reaches 74C at maximum.

My 4890 has reached 93C in FurMark, and consistently reaches 80C-85C when gaming. It's been doing this for over 5 months, and I've had no trouble with it.

Besides, unless whoever is designing the heatsinks for GPU's is mentally vacant, I think it's safe to assume that the stock heatsinks keep the GPU within operable temperatures.

Nvidia says that their cards can operate in the safe under 100C. but still +80C puts me off, very much.

Well the hotter and longer they run the shorter the life, and anything above 80C is too warm.

Link?

I have yet to find this true. I've got an FX5200 running passively in a server/backup system of mine, and the temperature of the GPU hovers around 80C when under minor stress. It's been running for 5 years now, and I haven't seen any issue from it running at a "too warm" temperature.

Besides, I seriously doubt a video card MFG would design a heatsink that would not allow the GPU to operate within it's maximum temperature specification.

80c is perfectly fine for your card, not gonna get damaged at those temps at all..

8800GT's heatsink werent good at all, GTS version had dual slot cooler and they were 20C on average lower. I said pass 80C is too warm(personal taste), when you get into the 85C range or higher theres issues somewhere with improper case cooling or gpu cooling. And when you get that high you can to see slow downs, crashes or even artifacting. Most cards might be rated for 100-110C which is boiling temp for water, and all that heat being produce by the gpu goes into the heatsink which warms it to a point were the memory doesnot release their heat as fast which in short insulates them.

Thanks guys i changed it back to default (auto fan speed) because I cant be bothered to keep changing it if i want to game, and also if i forgot then i might screw the card up lol

Dust in the heatsink and fan might be causing the high temps.
