you can simply go into Control Panel, Add/Remove and uninstall the display drivers that way. you do need to uninstall them before installing new ones. if you really wanna be thorough, you can always download a program called Driver Cleaner Pro 1.5 and use that. its not entirely necessary though.

as for drivers, if you go to Nvidia's website, when you get to the download area, you should see an option a little ways down that says BETA drivers. they are the best out at the moment IMO. 169.28's. and they are available for any OS. obviously make sure you pick the right one ;) lol

It's not entirely neccessary, but you may hit problems if you don't. Plus it's better to be safe then sorry.

he's right, its not entirely necessary no. but yeah i would definitely recommend you do it, to avoid any chance of a driver confliction or operating error. it doesnt take long.

Before you do the uninstalling, get the latest driver from nVidia's driver download page. It'll ask for things like OS and model GPU chip. Then do the uninstall from the Control Panel. I think this causes your PC to reboot. Then install the new drivers (and another reboot) and that should be it.

If you want to be 100% through this is a very good guide on how to completely uninstall your old drivers (which is really a very good idea) then reinstall the new driver version.

Ok first thing is go to Guru3d and get Driver Sweeper or Driver Cleaner Pro

"never let Vista or XP for microsoft Update install/update your drivers"

Driver Sweeper "installer"
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1655
Driver Sweeper "no install needed and this is what I use"
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1672

Driver Cleaner Pro
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745

First open up your C drive and you should see the NVIDIA Directory "unless you told it to install some place else", now open up the folder named WinVista64 or32 "depending on your os" and you should see a driver version folder 162.22 for example Leave this window open.

Vista
1. Right click on Computer---->Properties
2. Click on Device Manager
3. Expand Display Adapters
4. Right Mouse Button over the Video card Name
5. Select Uninstall, Click Delete the driver software for this Device
6. Do not reboot
7. Now That Window I told you to leave open with the NVIDIA directory now Delete your Driver Version Folder Example 162.22 then empty recycle bin.
8. REBOOT
9. Restart in Safe mode, Use the F8 key while your rebooting to do so select Safe Mode.
10. Now run Driver Sweeper or Driver Cleaner Pro, "I personally use the Driver Sweeper that you just run no install"
11. Make sure you tell it to Remove your NVIDIA Display Drivers, once it is finished
Reboot. once Vista reboots it will just reinstall a generic VGA adapter dont worry, at least its not the nvidia one.
12. Now Install the latest Video Drivers for your card. Your safest bet are the ones on the EVGA support Site. http://www.evga.com/8800driver/
13. Once it is finished installing REBOOT
14. Happy Gaming

XP Is pretty much the same for you, If some one wants to write one of these for XP Feel Free esp if I left any thing out "if you do please know exactly what your doing also this should work with the rest of the Geforce lines as well"

This Guide can also be used as a trouble shooting guide if your card is having issues, following this will let you know if it is the drivers or not. Using this method will let you know if its your drivers that are giving you all your issues, BSOD's, Hard Locks, Random reboots. Doing the above has fixed alot of my issues, and has saved me from ripping out my hair.
