So the 285GTX has come out and the 295GTX not too long ago.

Seeing how these are £300+ enthusiast cards I have to wonder why Nvidia considers them a priority? At times like this you would think Nvidia would be trying to get out their cheaper 200 series cards as fast as possible. A small upgrade over the 280GTX isn't going to affect much, the 200 series equivilent of the 8800GT on the other hand I can see actually selling well right now.

For an exsample we have the Chrysler management.

in late 80's went bad and needed something to add something to the company's line-up.

Dodge Viper was the thing to give status. in 92 they showed the car at geneve carshow, the car wasn't sold in a big number but gave some serious reputation to the brand.

The sell of ONE speciffic item isn't the biggest factor all the time, just the bragi'n rigths can end up selling more of the whole product line, Viper did that.

Enthusiast cards sell considerably less than high and mainstream range GPUs, if it was money they were after they wouldn't prioritize getting top tier cards out during a recession.

ATI ofter same performance cards for less money and the fact that they released GTX 200 series with just some months of difference from 9000 series. GeForce 5,6,7 had time between them and had major improvements imo, 8 series lasted long until we got 9 series. They just selling name now

All these cards coming out so fast that the games are still stuck in dx9 and all upgrades to the video cards are almost pointless. Most games dont even require really no better than a 8600 to run good with good graphics for most people. The 8800's are fast enough to max 98% of games, Getting these GTX's if you already have a geforce 88**/9**'s is a waste unless you need the bleeding edge which will cost you.

When the 8800 Ultras first came out you couldn't find them for less than about $800. Now that was an enthusiast card. Look at the GTX 285. It's already showing up for less than $400. Of course, when the 8800 Ultra appeared AMD/ATI had nothing that could compete. Now there's the 4870X2. Competition is good for the consumer.

Each time a new card like this is released, I have to wait a long time until newer versions come out. You know, the versions that have the same power, but with better power efficiency and actually run cool. It's an annoying process.

He is absolutely right, I have a 8800GTS 512 card and it still kicks the a$$ of any game I throw at it. Although I only seem to have a problem running Crysis Warhead. Everything else like WiC, Silent Hill HC, COH, TR:Underworld can all be at MAX settings. There's just no games coming out now or in the very near future that would warrant and upgrade from a 8 or 9 series card to be honest. I'll chill with my 8 series card until some super break through game releases that forces me to upgrade. Anything else like "04dcarraher" said would be a waste of money.

ATI had the performance crown with the HD4870x2. Nvidia needed something better in the shortest time possible. If you want performance parts, nvidia is already working on the GT212 that is supposedly aimed for the performance market (like the 8800gt did back in the day) so expect something really good with a good price range in a short time :)

I always thought the 8800GT was a fluke. Same performance as a 8800GTX for half the cost? Unbelievable. It'd be awesome if it became a pattern to release a '8800GT' every once in awhile.

I think nvidia has a pretty good product lineup right now. You can basically get good performance for $100 and up starting with a 9600GT. Of course the new exciting parts are going to up the ante. They will eventually release a GT200 based mainstream card. They usually take 6 months after releasing high end parts before they release a mainstream segment - granted they are slightly overdue but w/e.

That's what the 9800GT is for, there is also ATI, why are you worried? They're the ones who would lose business/marketshare. They were blind-sided by ATI with the 4800 series so that might have something to do with it.

Agreed that once you actually need that kind of power the card will be a lot cheaper.

The thing I don't understand is people always say whoa now that i've spent some rediculous amount of money I can play HL2 with 400fps. All you need is 30 and that's slightly above what the human eye can see. I suppose it is a hobby and I like to waste money on cars but when it comes to having an average of 30fps or 300fps on the same settings it really doesn't matter.

I've been using my 312mb 8800GTS for nearly 2 years now and it's a great little card, I can play a lot of games still on rather high settings, but it's not like I'm maxing crysis or anything but then again Crysis is a pretty game... but it isn't that great gameplay wise to be honest, really.

I don't know about you, but I can see a difference between 30 and 60 fps. The former is noticeably more fluid and smooth.

On topic...Nvidia is just in panic mode after being cornered with the HD 4800 series. They will regain their senses.
