I personally wouldn't buy a HD5850/HD5870 card. They are the first DX11 cards and everybody is excited but I say wait and see what nVidia has to offer then make your decision.

Sure the technical specifications are staggering.

Over 2 billion transistors, nearly 3 teraflops of power, and its based on 40nm technology.

The thing is that it beats the GTX 285 but not by a huge margin. ATI cards have used GDDR4/5 for a while now while nVidia has kept up with them and even beat them using GDDR3. Now imagine if nVidia shifts over to GDDR5 and doubles the stream processors and transistors of the GTX 285? What will happen then?

I agree that when Nvidia does finally come out with GT300, it's going to be a really good performer. The question is... when is that going to be? And how much is it going to cost them to make it?.. Because that cost trickles down to us, the buyer.

As of less than 2 weeks ago, Nvidia's chip yields on the GT300 are reported to be less than 2% successful so far. That means that for every 500 GPUs that TSMC tries to make using Nvidia's GT300 specifications, they're getting less than 10 good chips. That's REALLY, I mean SCARY bad. Unless they and TSMC get it together really fast, this is going to be a VERY expensive product to put to market, and also to buy!

nvidia may or may not have something up their sleeve to combat ATI with, but with what we currently know, whatever they are going to have will cost so much its not even worth bothering to consider, according to these reports. They arent likely to meet demands until mid next year. By then ATI will probably have a 5890 OC or something to compete heavily with.

I think this round goes to ATI with nVidia having little chance at retaliation. Personally i prefer it that way as nVidia has taken up a fair chunk of marketshare. A little stiff competition helps the consumer out in the end.

I agree. Competition is always good for us. I did not expect to see something outperform an 8800ultra for under $100 within three years, but ATI got competitive.

Aren't Nvidia using GRRD5 in their next cards as just a measure of lowering production costs?

I feel bad for you Nvidia guys out there. Hopefully you can stretch your 295 GTXs a bit longer.

magicalclick

They can. Not like every game is using DX11. But once they get a DX11 card, ATI probably has an even better one since they have a head start. Well, if you have new Xbox using DX11, then, it is seriously the time to upgrade since all good games will be DX11, not just few games anymore.

If the GTX 295 drops to around $300 then it'll be a better deal then the HD 5870 assuming you leave DX11 out of the picture and look at current benchmarks.

I really hope Nvidia somehow manages to release a price/performance competitive card soon to compete with the 5870. I swore that I would never spend more than $300 on a video card again, but the only thing that Nvidia has that will hang with the 5870 is a GTX295, which is a power-hungry beast!! I could run a 5870 on my PSU, but I can't even safely run a GTX 285 on it! Nvidia needs to get their 40nm technology together right quickly, because I really don't feel like upgrading my PSU when I see something from ATI that is THAT beastly on the market RIGHT NOW.

What the hell are you talking about. The 5870 is better than 295 in some benchies.

Not just that. Based on VRZONE's roadmap, there will be 5870x2 and 5890in Q4. Buying 5870 now and then to later find out 5890 in a couple months sounds like getting kicked in the rear.

I'll be sticking it out with my 8800GT until there's a DX11 price drop.

Im happy with my 8800GTS it plays everything at suprisingly good settings, but I am going to wait and see what nvidia has to offer for a mid end pc gamer... I know my new X4 965 rig is more than ready for what ever may come out I just hope they dont over price or I will be forced to go for a HD5850 its 30-50 cheaper than a GTX 285 and beats it in almost every bench I've seen.

Well, I just bought two 5870's for crossfire, and couldn't be happier. Anyone telling you to wait for Nvidia's cards aren't seeing the whole picture, that when they are released ATI will already have the X2, and 5890 released.

Check out some of the benchmark results I got in this thread:http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/270824-33-both-5870-updated-benchies

It's funny because Nvidia uses GDDR3 to cut costs (along with other cut backs), yet their GPUs are more expensive than their ATi counterparts. I'm fairly certain that Nvidia could cut price, if they wanted to. Although, I think if ATi went out of business that Nvidia would be considered a 100% monopoly.

That's a really nice-looking rig. I'm sure it performs decently too :P. I wouldn't go so far as to say that "anyone telling you to wait for Nvidia's card aren't seeing the whole picture," though. I'm probably going to wait, but not necessarily because I think GT300 is going to be a comparable price/performance product. I'm waiting because my current GPU does the job for me at my resolution, and if I buy a 5870 now, I might be missing out on price cuts that will come when the rest of the ATI/new Nvidia lineup shows up.
