Wich has better AA to use in a game like SC Supreme Commander and do you think a Inte Core 2 Doe Wolfdale 3.0GHZ with like 4 or 8 gigs of ram could run SC at a decent rez and graphic wise?

I kind of figure if I can get a pc to run or should I say if I can build a pc that would run SC at a decent look and all then any game that I have should work at or close to max.

Far as a budget goes? Right now I'm just looking and comparing to what all does what.

ATI cards usually take less of a performance hit when turning on AA and AF than Nvidia. But other than that, asking which is better in general is like asking if an apple or orange tastes better.

Supreme Commander, if I'm not mistaken, runs best with quad cores. I don't think even a high end duo core like the E8400 would suffice. I would get a Q6600.

Both have good cards to suit your needs. nVidia offers the very best right now, but I think ATIs have much better price/performance ratio.

ATI and Nvidia are both good brands, both just target the market a bit differently so you may get a better deal from one at a different price point.

As for Supreme Commander, I've been playing it since the beta. A fast dual-core will run the game nearly as fast as a quad core at the same speed. The game can use all 4 cores, but there are only two main threads, render and sim. As long as they get a dedicated core the game will run great.

That processor should run Supreme Commander beautifully.

Im not biased towards either company, but I guess if I had to choose I would choose Nvidia because the only graphic card that I own is Nvidia and Im very pleased with it. Plus I do like Nvidia's driver support.

Nvidia = Performance crown. ATI = price/performance ratio. The best Nvidia card (GTX295) is better than the best ATI card (HD4870x2) and the power consumption is amazingly low for the performance it gives!

It's mostly down to preference... nvidia currently has a slight advantage in performance, but the way ATI have been treating the enthusiast market, i'm thinking it could swing either way... Up to you

Thanks all of you very much. I'm not going to go off and buy a quad core just for one game that would be like buiilding a pc just for one game na not going to do that buy thank you for your input. Currently I have a amd athlon dual core 3800+ and this think barly can play sc even with all on low and even some on off settings. I'm not looking for the very max on SC just like may be some settings on high and the rest on low or medium something like that. Another question would be. Would a 8800gt overclocked 512mb be able to do such a thing with SC or would it struggle to do SC even at low settings? I really don't want to spend any more money then I must for the parts that I plan to get and a new GPU just isn't what I want at the moment. Down the road yea but right now no. Not unless Circiut City has some really great deals on there cards then I might get something.

your avatar and post totally disagrees with your statement of not being biased. As for me, even though I have the 4870x2, I still think currently the Nvidia has the best card to get not only because they are slightly faster but their PhysX is a big plus for me (even though not a lot of games use it to its full capacity)

an 8800 gt, would do fine in SC, my 8800 Ultra, maxes all options, and barely went below the mid 40 in fps, note that I play in a 1200x1024 tho...

I've owned many ATI and nVidia cards over the years. They have historically gone through cycles where at any one moment in time one had the better offering, and then the next quarter the other did.

They both make good cards, but I have to say, in terms of game compatibility, nVidia has always caused fewer issues.

I'd say go with a cheapo 8800GT for best price/performance/compat.

I already have a 8800 GT 512mb gpu right now and plan just to put this into my new pc and then I have some other cards laying around here and so I'lll put one of them into the one I'm using now. So then I'll have 2 pcs working. I have heard that both are very good companys but I have only owned Nvidia cards and so I was just wondering what you guys thought of them and so thanks again for all of your info. I assumed that the 8800gt would work just fine with SC and so I figure that it was my current pc slowing things down and not the gpu its self. So that is when I decded to build a pc my self and all so the other reason was that I have run out of room in my current pc. So if I do decide to get a different gpu down thr road I would be able to do so cause in my new one I'll have a lot of space cause it is a mid size tower adn not a smoall wich I have now. If I run across a cheap ATI gpu card then I may go with them just to try them out. So them my new pc would be Intel processors and a ATI gpu if I whent that dirction. Right now I have AMD and Nvidia gpu in my pc. Also I have XP but I may goto Vista not sure about that one.

Well anybody can own any of the cards but very few people will want to put the company logo as their display pic. For example, I support Nvidia too but you don't see me wave a sign that tells everyone about it. hence I have all the right to assume you are an nvidia fan boy.

This helps me a bit too, I was trying to decide on a new card for my new build PC.

ATI has their pro's/cons just like NVidia. I was comparing alot of different cards. But, I would say I am "biased" cause I've only stuck with NVidia cards (and Voodoo's before that). I figure, if it works fine, minor problems if any, why change ? I'm the same with Hard Drive's, always getting Western Digitals.

I know it's a debate on what's best, but I'm going with an NVidia GeForce 285 or 290, pending on my budget and what's out in the next few weeks.

Maybe it's time to point out that it's a chocobo from the final fantasy series, and it's not a matter of fact as what's a good webcomic or not but that your avatar reflect what you support/ want to be represented as. It doesn't matter anymore though since steely changed his avatar.

want more information ? this thread went mostly useless without benchmark asking stuff without seen actaul picture and test methodology it also depend of the resolution ur playing : ATI IS mostly a LEader in price performances for 1920x1200 since 4850x2 (1gig) can be found as low as 240$ AFTER MIR and the 4850x2 2GB : (290$) and the 4870x2 : 350$ after mir : which are all those 3 Card Better then 280GTX Overclocked such as XFX XXX / 285GTX Such as XXX Overclocked in majority of the game At 1920x1200 resolution which is Great monitor so far i own one of these monitor :D

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2009/01/30/bfg-tech-geforce-gtx-285-ocx-1gb/3
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2009/01/08/nvidia-geforce-gtx-295-quad-sli-review/5

if you want the power for lowest price : 4850x2 1GB & 2GB / 4870x2 (2GB) Are both cheaper then 285GTX OC :
but the 295GTX is startnig to fall soon at 400$ rumour * currently lowest price 450$

tough i'm not sure as 8.12 & 9.1 Release recently if 295GTX quad sli Defeat 4870x2 Crossfire X By a huge +50fps. in majority of game
Id have to read lot more i don't Trust The Benchmark of Tomshardware it being a while. i don't belive them as credible source
but iv heard of 295GTX quad sli does 64xQ FSAA But I wonder if it even possible to do such in any single game ? At 1920x1200

For Gaming no DAytona ? you see benchmark ? unless you sli : in vast majority of game the 4870 1GB / 4850x2 for 240$US and the 4850x2 2GB for 280$ and the 4870x2 for 350-370$ is Better then there single card layout for now : and will get even better with R970 for gaming So ATI lead into game but NVIDIA LEAD into multi-tasking operaito as : physic X : TwimpTBP / Cuda / But you know what ? apprently i have some Physic X: on my 4870x2 . or Able to handle them in Sacred II Fallen angel when the thing dies look exatly like Physic X or When i smash them down a montain they slide it all the way like if they where physical bodies ;) i think that was new of feature of 8.12 tough as in the installation process it install Physic X Driver into ur machine ? but have not much information about it that beside i seem to handle all the physic effect possible into Sacred II fallen angel Id need to try mirrior edge And Look if the Flag and Glass Does it but don't fell like buy it cause iv done the game in 7 hour of gameplay on Xbox 360 : i wish it was at last 40 hour of gameplay but it was good gameplay the best 7 hour iv played in a while so far If You read the Two REview i posted : 2 post ago it all lead to 4850x2 / 4870x2 for better price then 280GTX overclocked / 285 Overclcoked and better for gaming purpose in vast majority of game expect Cryisis (not warhead)

Really theyre both basically the same, it doesn't matter either way.

Last year ATI was ahead, the 4870x2 outperformed Nvidia's fastest card the GTX 280, but now Nvidia are ahead with the GTX 295 being faster than the X2. Soon ATI will come out top again, but again only for a short time. They're both good, just in some cases games work better on one than the other.

Nvidia for PhysX. Coming out: Empire: Total War and Cryostasis at least. There are already games that supports it like Mirror's Edge and Unreal Tournament 3 and others.
