Hi there,

Just a quick question. Does the difficulty slider in Oblivion have any effect on the rate at which you level yur character i.e. if i choose an easier difficulty will i not get as much exp during gameplay?

Thanks,

Carey

It does depending on your play style. For a 'tank' class for example, you'll do a lot more damage, meaning that you'll hit enemies less and you won't get as much experience going into that weappon's stat.

Better choose the easy mode first, if you chose hard or even normal you will die so quick that you might not enjoyning the game.... that's just my opinion.

I love that feature in oblivion, Lets just say you find a dungeon and you get in and die...you increase the difficulity from the menu without exiting to the main menu!!! There you go its easier, now go in that cave without needing to level up. It also works the other way around: ".zzzz i kill everything..." Increase the difficulity and its challenging again. The problem is that npcs balance their level with you. There not many enemy types so pretty much the difficulity feels the same for most of its parts without any elite enemies. In any case small creatures like rats and fish, always take less attacks. Its more of a hero game than strict leveling up.

Thanks for your replies.

So if i have this straight: the higher the difficlty setting the more xp i gain in defeating enemies therefore the quicker i level up. However, since allNPCs level the same rate that i do, does it really matter how quickly or slowly i increase in level?

Cheers,

Carey

The easier the game is the less hits it takes to kill someone, so combat takes less time. In nay case if you play on easiest rats and fish die with one hit and humans take much more depending on their armor. Still reallistic however. By defeaut difficillity the rats and fishes take more hits, but its also relative to how strong your character is. You gain xp by using your main skils, so if blade is one of you main skills, you will level up faster by running and chopping your way through and attacking a monster many times...and not by killing strong monsters. Strong monsters= more hits :P However if you you have achemy and athetics as primary skills, then you better run and make potions alot.

Thanks again for your help. I think i'll set the difficulty setting just hard enough so i don't die too easily yet have enemies require considerable effort to defeat. :) Carey

The leveling in vanilla Oblivion is notoriously poor. At the very least, I'd highly recommend installing: Obscuro's Oblivion Overhaul.

Talk about lazy. Why not go out, get better weapons, and come back to the cave later?

Because weapons and armors in oblivion are not that many, neither their stregth and offence is that high. It is all related to how high level your character is. Which points out why i didnt like morrowind. Why i got to get in that cave and get owned by a monster, after i brake all my armor and his armor(if its a npc) and get many diseases and after 100000000 attacks either win or die? I want to get in that cave now, now come back after i level up 3-4 times. The difficulity slider did wonders in that case. Its not about being lazy, its about not having the patience to level up so much so you can get in that damn cave, let alone the 10000 slashes to kill something. Killing mudcrabs in the beginning was fun, leveling up too, but after a while my character wasnt strong enough to progress the game despite the time i spended leveling up in the beginning :(

Thank you for the link however i prefer to play games as the developer intended. Upon a second play-through i'll certainly consider the leveling mod to which you refer. Cheers, Carey

Good on you. :) I agree that's the best way play games. I played Oblivion without mods and finished the game...it's possible to finish the game on the first level, by the way. If you finish it, try it again with mods. It's a completely different and better experience.
