Hey guys, got a bit of a weird problem.

I just recently reset my entire machine because I just built a new pc (specs in sig). I'm wanting to install Oblivion again, but it doesn't read the disc, then my computer's start menu and all menus freeze, except for the task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete). The disc is pretty scratched, but my brother's PC can still read it and he's able to play it fine. Any idea what the deal is?

I've had this with a couple of disks, where when I've goe to my compuer the disk keeps making a noise but doesn't spin and the whole screen freezes - taking the CD out snaps it out of it. Oblivion gave me a lot of greif rregrind that, I think due to its securom stuff on it as I had an error about it once; just try restarting your comp and running the installation before anything else on your PC, and it takes a long time to install too so give it time once it gets going

Hmmmm--is ur OS new too? When i tried running WinXP--64bit version / there were all sorts of issues like that. I even called Bethesda and they couldnt help. When i upgraded to Vista Ultimate x64 / No worries. It should run fine on XP pro though?

Further--Bethesda also said that Quadcore CPUs can create a conflict with the games programming for whatever reason??

I've tried taking the disc out once it freezes, but with no luck. I have to restart my PC after I put the disc in. I've also tried running the installation before anything else, but that hasn't worked either. Thanks for the response, though, I appreciate any help I can get.

No, my OS is about 4 years old, but I do have SP2 installed. I just reinstalled Windows XP last Sunday, so it's not the OS, to the best of my knowledge. (I have Windows XP home edition installed) And I'm pretty sure it's not my CPU since I have a Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0ghz that I just upgraded to recently. Thanks for your help though.

Install dvd decrypter and make an image of the game, than use a program like daemon tools to mount the image made. If dvd decrypter freezes than the disk is too damaged, your brother may still be able to use it to play but he may not be able to use it for a full reinstall.

PS: Making a copy of your gaming using dvd decrypter is completely legal and you are allowed, however you can't sell or rent the game, remember that.

ya could try right clicking the DVD icon - explore the disk and run setup from there? Maybe the Auto run feature isnt working for some odd reason?

I had the same problem with XP Pro; what a nightmare that OS was. Ironically Vista home prem 64 is much more stable for me :\

Link, any luck?

Try updating your DVD firmware. That might help improve tracking.

Or, when your brother isn't looking, swap his drive with yours:lol:

yes go to start type in msconfig, and turn off alot of that bs on startup, and install it (after you restart of course) and if you want to turn that crap back on after your finished.

I reset my entire machine last Sunday, and the only programs that startup when Windows starts is CCC (Catalyst Control Center --ATI), and AVG (my anti-virus).

I just tried to create an image of the Oblivion disc on my HDD with ImgBurn, but it failed at 94%. It stated that the disc had a read error. So now I'm thinking that the problem is that the disc itself is corrupted somehow, or that it is so scratched it just doesn't run. But again, it is strange that my brother can still use it to play the game. Anyway, thanks for the help guys.
