Interview with Feargus Urquhart

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/25/ob...eoples-worlds/

IWD3:

Quote:
Obsidian is also pushing on updating a former Black Isle property: Icewind Dale 3. "I was talking to Atari last week," he confides, "and said why don't we do this?" The old series, he says, didn't end because of low sales. "They stopped being made because of licensing issues, and Interplay going out of business, and BioWare moving on to console, and a whole lot of things. So a part of it is, why not go make Icewind Dale 3? You can't spend $20 million on it, but why not go make it?"

Original IP project:

Quote:
The ultimate goal for a lot of studios making sequels is to finally jump off and work on their own original IP. Does Obsidian ever want to take that jump? "Absolutely," confirms Urquhart, before going on to say that Obsidian already has an original IP title underway. "We have a whole big cool world idea that we can hopefully talk about soon. That is a whole new world, a whole new thing. It's being put together by Josh Sawyer, who was the project director on Fallout New Vegas, and Chris Avellone is involved."

Must-do licensed project:

Quote:
Before Obsidian begins on its own work, Urquhart says there are a few other projects in the pipeline, and one is an unannounced title we'll be hearing about soon. "There is a property that we are working on, that we can't talk about yet," he teases. "It's something we've been working on since the middle of last year, just with a small team, it's only been five or ten people. It's a license that you would go, well you gotta do it. It's not a license where it's, 'Ok, we'll take that and we can do something with it.' It's more like, well that's once in a lifetime." (Presumably, this is the Wheel of Time game, but Urquhart didn't say more on the subject.)

Obsidian is a smart studio. Spawn sequels for other people to stay afloat, try your own projects on the side if not risk-free, then at least nearly so. Alpha Protocol was a very good try. Don't know about Dungeon Siege though. If I was Obsidian, I wouldn't touch that one with a ten foot pole. Chris Taylor should really admit that RPGs are not his forte and concentrate on RTS. Then again, maybe they'll be the ones to make this thing a little less lame.

I've never played the older Icewind Dale games but more RPGs are welcome so I'll likely try this one if they make it.

Never played Icewind Dale, but a new PC centric/exclusive AD&D, single player(focused) would be sweet... rather than what they are doing to Neverwinter...

Icewind Dale 3 eh? Wouldn't mind seeing how a modern day Iso developed by a fairly major studio would do (Assuming it would be Iso, would hate to see Icewind Dale move into the realm of 3D). Will be interesting to see what their new IP is as well.

New Icewind Dale!!!

I LOVED Icewind Dale 1 & 2, this would be great indeed.

"but a new PC centric/exclusive AD&D, single player(focused) would be sweet"

No! Icewind Dale 1 & 2 were party base (Party of 6 like Baldur's Gate) and it should remain that way, IMHO.

I meant single player, as in not an online focused/only game like the new Neverwinter...

Icewind Dale was a testement to how strong was the core gameplay in those old Black Isle CRPGs. I hope they can do something in the same level.

Obsidian gets so much hate but I love their work. In recent memory, Alpha Protocol was one of the best games I've played in a while. This is great news.

Alpha protocol rocked...Ill be pickingu p dungeon siege also..Now this..Also people atari is working on some thing call Neverwinter..My guess is obsidion will be doing this..The dude who said obsidion sucks they rock..Not sure what games you been playing lately..How ever recent games of theres have been fun..Can name games they made that i still play today also..

Can some one please stay in the form of the old style..Id love some one to bring back the six party player system..Fighter,ranger,cleric.thief,mage..Thats dnd..Wish dragon age was like this instead of 4 pleyers..As much as i love dao...The old days you can have a person be a fighter, mage, a thief/mage,..It was old dnd the was it was meant to be..

I have a feeling you are making fun of us :( Am cry. - Looks like they'll be busy, damn they have alot of projects running, I say they need a little extra manpower to stay on top of things. I am in for IWD3 assuming they get Jeremy Soule on board, his score for IWD is probably his best work.

i would love to see a new dale. the first 2 were great. as he mentioned they cant spent 20 million on it but it wouldnt need that kind of money. maybe dust off and update the old infinity engine so that it can support higher reses, use 3d models instead of 2d sprites and such like. sell it through the likes of impulse and steam and your good to go.

I enjoyed the Icewind Dale series, even if it did focus more on the action side of thjngs compared to Baldur's Gate 2. Hopefully the third game will be great.

So long as they can get a team to iron out bugs well enough then i'm all good. Its just about the only thing i really hold against Obsidian. Buggy games can be just really endemic with that studio.

alpha protocol was okay...at best...i had problems wanting to play it a second time thru cause it was stutter fest on my system...and there is no earthly or godly reason for that...it was a great idea and i liked it...it is definitly what me would be if it was a modern game...new vegas i got very bored with...felt like more of the same with nothing new to add except iron sights...but thats not really even necessary...cause it takes to dang long to kill someone...unless u use vats...but i am very much lookin forward to a new icewind dale game...i have always loved the stories of drizzt and company

BG3 is unnecessary. the BG saga is completed in BG2:ToB (the whole story is previewed in BG1), and there's no need for another installment.

what we need is true spiritual successor of BGs, and we have that in NWN2->MotB rather than the in-name-only DA:O.

to clarify things, Bioware was going mostly console with DA:O as their pet PC project. Both Mass Effect and Jade Empire were meant to be xbox exclusive, PC ports were possible only because of EA and 2K.

as of now, Bioware is multiplatform developer. seeing how they handle DA:O, I wouldn't want them to do another dnd project, and I don't think they want to either.

how the hell was bioware going 'mostly console with origins' when many reviewers said that the PC version is the superior one? how is origins 'mostly console'? I really want to know that.

Maybe he meant Bioware was going in a console direction at the time DA:O started development. Such as KOTOR/JE/ME all being xbox exclusives at one point, while DA:O was a pet PC project. Mass Effect was never intended to come to PC, it may have only happened do to EA gobbling them up...

I don't understand. Origins was never meant to be exclusive. Why would they go in a console-only direction? All those other games, Kotor, Mass Effect, are actually very good ports. I still think Kotor was a very impressive game even if it was on consoles first.

DA:O was intended as a PC exclusive, or at least Bioware claimed such for about 5-6 years of its existence.

[QUOTE="FelipeInside"] I wouldn't mind BioWare doing a Baldurs Gate 3..... (flame shields enabled)SkyWard20

I usually would trim down quotes, but I have to keep my message intact this time...

how the hell did you conclude that I think "bioware going 'mostly console with origins'" where did I say that Bioware went console with DA:O?

you'd better sharpen up your reading comprehension and do some digging on the Bioware history.

I was only pointing out the fact that Bioware went all console with Jade Empire and Mass Effect but kept DA:O as their PC pet project back then.

as for my problem with DA:O...I have not mentioned anything about "console" if you can read.

Hahaha, almost fell off my chair

Good news, I just wish Obsidian could get a bit more time to work on their games, a bit of polish would really help them.

DA:O was a PC only game up until about a year before the release, which I think EA pushed them to bring to consoles. It's a good thing they did since it did so well on both systems. Mass Effect coming to PC I don't think was an EA decision since they purchased Bioware just a few months before that game was released on PC. Now with ToR, it's safe to say they are back on the PC for good, or at least the foreseeable future.

Imagine if Obsidian had a bug-testing team on par with Valve's.

Icewind Dale 3 sounds good. But how about a new RPG set in Greyhawk, or Dark Sun? Hell, even Ravenloft. Or setting it somewhere else in the Forgotten Realms, like the Moonshae Isles, or Kara-Tur.

Planescape, prehaps.

DA:O was amazing, but not worthy of being called the spiritual successor to BG:2. I have been waiting for news like this for a long, long time.
