Hello guys

Lately I've been getting a feeling that my trusty ol' 8800GT 512MB from Palit is starting to show its age, with The Witcher 2 giving me 20FPS at minimum settings and all..

I've been thinking about getting a Gigabyte overclocked GTX 560Ti. The deal is this - I have an Antec 400W power supply that came with my Antec case (a Sonata II) and an Intel C2Q6600@2.4GHz.

I can get a better PSU for the card and my CPU overclocked to 3.0 with a new cooler (right now I have the Zalman 7500 that keeps it at around 40c idle at warm weather) but I can't help but wonder if that's necessary.

So the big question is - how much of a bottleneck will I feel staying at the stock 2.4GHz speed with the new video card? And if it's a severe one, will I get significantly better results overclocking to 3.0GHz?

Thanks

You will probably get a minor bottleneck in some games that really like quads, but you won't have any problems where the game become unplayable or anything. if you OC the thing you will be home free.

at 3,0 it will be little to no bottleneck at most games but in CPU intensive it will still be somewhat a bottleneck. If possible overclock to 3,2-3,4ghz and you will be ok

"Oh noes teh bottleneck!" Don't worry about it. It will be very small. The term bottleneck is tossed around wayy to much.

You'll get about 3-10 more FPS across the boards.

Isn't that a little overkill? I was thinking about the Seasonic S12II-620 as I've heard it's very good and has a very comfortable price.

my question is. If an 8800gt can't play the witcher 2 on the lowest settings how is the 360 supposed to run it at all? I'm telling ya guys, developers are teaming with hardware companies to make games less and less optimized in order to sell more and more hardware.

This. Some people probably get slight bottlenecks and don't even realise because they're so minor. You'll be fine. By the way I have a gigabyte SOC 560 and they're terrific. I never go above 56 degrees either. Best investment I ever made

I'm hoping there's gonna be an optimization patch due before the game launches. It'd be unfair IMO if there wasn't.

I agree, but to play the latest games you need decent hardware. Its not fair to expect to play the latest games on a 5 year old card.

Since the 360 is a single, unchanging piece of hardware, developers can code directly for it without any need for additional driver, API, or severe game engine overhead. You can program textures that fill the amount of RAM the system has to the kilobyte. Programming a game for the huge multitude of potential hardware it has to run on is a daunting task to say the least.

Look up the term "close to metal". The reason why a 360 can play witcher 2 is because there aren't a ton of api between the hardware and game.

Same, there are vids on youtube with an 8800gt running the game on 720p in excess of 40fps.

Ya it's so stupid how people compare a PC with a 360 when the PC is running at twice the resolution.

I have Gigabyte GTX 560 Ti and Quad Core Q8400 at 2.66 GHz which is only a little more powerful than a stock Q6600. I run all of the games super smooth. I don't experience bottlenecks. Well maybe there are, but I just can't notice them.:?

I run Witcher 2 at 1920x1200 resolution and everything high the only think I have disabled is UberSampling. Make sure you disable that. When I have that on my frame rate drops way down to 15 fps.

When I turn it off I get 35-61 frames per second.:)

Not to mention that in every other game it is very smooth. Playing Metro 2033 with Nvidia Advanced PhysX + DX11 and it's all smooth get over 30+ frames per second, very rarely it dips down and if it does, it won't be any lower than 26 fps.

Crysis works perfect. Battlefield Bad Company 2 runs at 61 frames per second in most of the times with 8x MSAA and everything else all high.

On 1080p there's gonna be a very minor bottleneck. it's really a very overused term. You should be able to crank that q6600 up to 2,8 w/o extra voltage, u'll want to get a better PSU for anything better than that. You are already pushing it with a 400W PSU, I would get a 600W Corsair if ur not planning on going SLi and at least 750W if u want to go SLi in the future.

You will get performance equal to that of a low-mid end quad in games that favor quads, but otherwise, you're fine.

How would this SeaSonic S12II-620 be? I'm looking to get a new PSU but I want one that's reasonably priced. It's around $100 where I live. Is it reliable enough for this video card upgrade?
