First Radeon HD 5870 Performance Figures SurfaceHere are some of the first performance figures of AMD's upcoming Radeon HD 5870 published by a media source. Czech Gamer posted performance numbers of the card compared to current heavyweights including Radeon HD 4870 X2, Radeon HD 4890, and GeForce GTX 285. Having not entered an NDA with AMD, the source was liberal with its performance projections citing AMD's internal testing that include the following, apart from the two graphs below:

• Radeon HD 5870 is anywhere between 5~155 percent faster than GeForce GTX 285. That's a huge range, and leaves a lot of room for uncertainty.
• When compared to GeForce GTX 295, its performance ranges between -25 percent (25% slower) to 95 percent (almost 2x faster), another broad range.
• When two HD 5870 cards are set up in CrossFire, the resulting setup is -5 percent (5% slower) to 90 percent faster than GeForce GTX 295. Strangely, the range maximum is lesser than that on the single card.
• When three of these cards are setup in 3-way CrossFireX, the resulting setup is 10~160 percent faster than a GeForce GTX 295.
• The Radeon HD 5850 on the other hand, can be -25 percent (25% slower) to 120 percent faster than GeForce GTX 285.

AMD reportedly used a set of 15 games to run its tests. Vague as they seem, the above numbers raise more questions than provide answers. The graphs below are clear, for a change.

The jump between 4890 and the 5870 is actually very impressive. Almost double the framerates in Hawx, and 3000 more points in 3dMark. I'm already regretting not waiting one month longer before purchasing my rig :(

My concern are the huge ranges. Makes me think the card is unstable, unless it is a driver error I may avoid this card.

what's interesting though is that theorectically the 5870 would be about as fast as two 4890's in crossfireX.

Yeah, the ranges seem like it's pointing to the drivers. That's one hell of a card, that just means 4870s/4890s will go even further in price, although they're already dirt cheap for what they can do.

I've got my 4890, and this is pretty impressive...But I want to see what nVidia have in store for this next set of cards.

If this turns out to be correct then this will be like a new 8800GTX in performance jumps!

is there other benchmarks as they only show HAWK which heavily favors ati and dx10.1 so it would be nice to see some benchmarks for different games.johnny27

I'll believe it when I test them out personaly after many years in this industry I have to say it happens every time yet somehow people always fall for the hype of fake tests results im seriously getting tired of this. Endless links to forums and blogs till eventualy it ends up in a rumour section of actaul hardware site... if anyone has knows its them, wait 2-3 months then compare thses benchmarks to the actual benchmarks from reviews.

Awww,,,, that's too much. 5770 @ $200? But that's what a 4890 costs, now. Wonder how the benches between the two are going to compare if they do end up being around the same price... Although, I have to say this is the first time I've heard of a 5770.Threesixtyci
