Sounds like you have been hit with a ddos attack. I had this same issue with my old pc. I had to run a system restore. My HP had a built in feature that allowed me to run system restore before the computer started up. Are you able to do that? I have to say though even after I restored my system parts of the virus was still on my computer. But after I restored it I was able to download virus software and get rid of all the viruses.

Did this happen on Vista 64bit? Don't you use virus protector? I always have backups of my drive so I can restore. If the PC is running vista you can access system restore by booting from the DVD.

Eh that's a very broad term, and I wouldn't really classify it as DOS attack. OP, go get the distro of linux called Ubuntu, boot onto it from the live cd(make sure you get the 32bit version, not x64, well you could but then you'd have to force the deb install for avast) Then download avast free and scan your C: drive from within Ubuntu, should clear you up.

Boot from DVD by changing boot order in bios or you could do what jigglywiggly said.

How and the world does him having an virus equate to him getting ddos attacked? lol, wow! I don't get many viruses so I don't know what I can tell you, other than when you do get the system up and running...go get Kaspersky Anti-virus or Internet Security Suite (you can download a 1 month trial on their website), it's one of the best on the market. I'm sure that'll get rid of all the pesky viruses.

I don't know.. I had a problem like this and I couldn't get into IE or Firefox to download anything.

This is what happened to my computer - Denial of Service. Sounds like he's having the same issues.

I really doubt it's a DOS attack, DOS attacks are caused by the network I.e ping floods, they arn't viruses.

OK, you wont like this, but if you've ever torrented anything before, or thought about it, now is the time to start.

OK, this is what to do, go to utorrent (dot) com, on your old computer, download the program, no viruses or anything, so don't worry.

next go to torrentz (dot) com, search for this [geek squad MRI], click the one with the most peers, it'll open another window or tab, if there is a link for a site called mininova, use that, if not use the top one.

now on that page there should be a button somewhere that says Download This Torrent, or something like that, click that, tell it to open it with utorrent,

when thats finished downloading, (it could take awhile), burn it to a DVD using something like imgburn, or alcohol, then load it into the computer, and set your CD/DVD drive to be the main boot device in your bios, when you boot off the disc, you'll get the geek squad menu, not the operating system, click on the FACE button, and just hit next, or continue until it starts the scan. this will fix any hardware, software or malware problems on your computer(well find hardware, not fix), and its easy to use again if this happens to you or anyone you know again, this is the most powerful virus scanner ON THE PLANET!! it combines seven or eight different scanners, including, kapersky, mcaffe, and panda, i don't remember the rest.

**this is frowned upon by best buy:twisted:, as they like to charge you a couple hundred dollars to click the go button for you.** ;)

i decided to get the links for you:

uTorrent

Torrentz

Geek Squad MRI Version 5.0.1

hope this isn't bad!

+1.

That's the first thing I'd try. Here are some good and well known antivirus programs: Avira AntiVir, AVG Free 8.5 and Avast!. Only have one installed at a time to prevent problems. I think Avast! can be run from a USB flash drive so if you're having trouble intalling it, you may want to try that.

Reformatting is the only way to be sure you have a clean system, and that viruses do not have an open door waiting to get back in. Denial of Service attack? you guys are being serious? Alright, unplug your internet... still cannot open up a program? strike that as a possibility. DDoS attacks are designed to attack web servers, to bring them down and stop people from being able to access services. To get a DDoS attack on your machine means you really made somebody angry, and they have the bandwidth and computer sitting around to devote to you- or they have a personal botnet. Most often, your computer will get a bad piece of software on it, and be added to someone's botnet to attack others, not the other way around. Try safe mode and scan, but I will always say-- reformatting is the only way to be sure you are clean.
