Yes it has been done I believe with both vegetable and mineral oil and no you don't have to seal anything off because mineral/vegetable Oil does not conduct any electricity its essentially as conductive as air. It's a cool idea, but vegetable oil tends to spoil after awhile and you need some sort of oil cooler because while the system is slow to heat up 12+ hours, its also very slow to cool down.

You don't have to seal anything just keep components with moving parts such as HDDs and fans out of it. Johnson's baby oil is a popular coolant, i'm not sure how effective it is but it's moderately affordable unlike the proper coolant used in the cray super computers.

I would keep my heatsink/fans on the CPU, just to spread the heat better. But Djdarkforces posted a pic of an awesome submerged a while back. Maybe he'll wander in and provide the link...

What are the biggest problems you guys have heard of using oil PCs? So far the only thing I can think of is, yes everything stays cool but after the pc has been on for a couple of hours the oil overall begins to heat up and takes even longer to cool. any ideas?

You're supposed to use a water cooling loop to get lower temps. Submersion cooling from what i've seen has higher temps than air over long running periods without a pump it just takes a long time to heat the oil up to that temp hence why it initially looks better than air.

Oil degrades plastic over time, does not even take that long. Bye bye motherboard etc. Oil makes doing any tinkering problematic to impossible. Oil is messy.

Well there's a company that specialises in submersion cooled PCs and they offer a 1 year warrenty as standard with the option to upgrade to a 3 year.

If oil is corrosive to plastic then why do you buy it in plastic? : )
