Swap GTX280 for 4870X2, change X38 with DDR3 for X48/P45 with DDR2, get 4GB of DDR2 RAM, swap CPU for E8400/8500. Plus a slightly better PSU wouldnt hurt either.

Oh is the 4870x2 out yet? i couldnt find it on the site. Also would a highend dual proccessor be better then a lowerend quad proccessor? which i think is what your suggesting, correct me if i am wrong.

Srry. I updated previous post. 4870X2 is coming out in 2 days, some stores in Austria already have them listed for sale. And yes ATM i think that high end dual core CPU would be a better option then lowerend quad core, unless you are true multi-tasker, but things might change in near future.

EDIT: If you are willing to Overclock quite a bit, getting a quad core wouldn't be bad choice too.

That is something that only u know the best. Onboard sound will do a decent job, but don't expect anything special from it. If you want quality audio experience, then sound card paired with decent speakers/headphones is a must IMO.

domke13 you finally said someting smart =) 4870x2 & dual core high overclock FTW on gaming :P
soundcard better quality then that like x-Fi prelude and stuff is mostly for someting else like 5.1 & or headphone experiances
to see really a boost into it compare to build-in soundcard also it will add more fps in the gameplay experiances to go that like 5-10fps. and EAX 5.0 support

Hmm then Cuda Ftw i heard for programing . so 260-280GTX. while ati is still power-full at media-application i dunno.
i heard cuda is much better then ati for modeling while offerings game performances without have to go fire fireGL of ati for extreme enthusiast modeling or. Quadro & testla of nvidia made for C+ compiler. instead of. Gaming *-)
mean while quadro is already far powerfully for gaming compare to any intel gMA Or graphic of intel so we wonder if larabee can do anything good lol
so since ur at university you may go enthusiast it depend of what level of thing you study
i wish you good luck trough ur univesity.
so http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CUDA programming. mean while IT also offer good performances in game
while 4870x2 is having mroe power for bucks. NVIDIA is offering a C compiler which is also aw-some for folding @home
something your gpu just can't process as much without ;)
mean while TESTLA IS the candy of the game designer but that too expensive
quadro marketing & designing as well
And cuda Well it offer kinda the same thing but at lower scale. mean while you can play game.
see review of video card and chose ur Brand. ATI OR nvidia.
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3354 it gpu review
if it mainly for gamingi belief R700X2 or 4870 + Quad core Q9450 or Q9550 or E8600 + X48 motherboard Steam or P45 is the best bang for buck

NFroce 790i or ultra. 280gTX & Quad core Q9450 or Q9550. while for gaming while i think quad is better for multi-tasking & what u study while keep a good more study then it it for alot more for study rather then gaming experiance at all max :P on 1920x1200 & belows.
for make a pc we must build it from that website
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/
http://www.dabs.com/
seem to be best price
the quad work good both-way gaming experience and if overclock via those motherboard. you not only get better stuff examples. Below where there review of xbits labs
looking if there some of 9450 Oc & non oc with application that do like that it work awesome ;) Xvid go from 40fps to 60fps. in encoding. so is H264. the most know video convert
i dunno if that affect allot game designer. but i think video encoding & graphic design aren't far away of each other.

so guy what can we make for 1000 pound XD ? probably something big :P
if you guy got clue i think it cuda for game deisnger with 3d models. so he should stick to 280GTX ? or 260GTX right ?
because i think if twas mainly only only only for working then he would need Quadro or Fire
because GPGPU in game designer & model can't be defeat by gpu but gpu is for gaming

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core2duo-e8600_8.html#sect0

re-edit increased knowledge og GPGPU
http://www.trustedreviews.com/graphics/review/2008/06/25/nVidia-GeForce-GTX-280/p4
i think ati offer nothing like that so . 260-280GTX

in case ya get confuse in my typing. plz notice me.
