I've been to some many sites I've lost count. I'm looking for a laptop. Seems simple right? Wrong. It seems every site/brand I check has very bad horror stories. Is there a site that I can feel safe ordering from. And at this point I think I need some help choosing the right machine. The type of games I want it to handle are WoW, Diablo3, The Old Republic...

Do you live in America or elsewhere? If you live in the states definitely check out www.newegg.com, its widely regarded as having some of the best service and customer support in the industry. As far as brands for laptops, I'm a pretty big fan of Asus myself, they build cheap but pretty long lasting machines.

Just some advice, every item out there has horror stories. They also tend to stick out a bit more than the positives. As long as the overall ratings are good, then you are fine.

Is this going to be used for gaming or just general purpose work? (web surfing, typing papers, etc.)

I was researching a good laptop for my bro and I found Asus gaming laptops are the best. This one is similar to the one he got but it has only 6GB of RAM.

Well now see...I'm reading alot of things about ASUS and the "GSOD" (grey screen of death) It seems everything I research has bad stories, as someone already said. Looks like I'm gonna have to just roll the dice, pick one and hope for the best. Question. Is Alienware laptops as bad as people say? I know thier over priced but at this point I dont care.

I don't know but as you said they are overpriced and they don't look as ergonomic as Asus laptops.

Ok I'm at Amazon right now, still cant believe I didnt think to go here. Still one question, there seems to be a choice with most of these rigs ATI 5870 or Nvidia gtx 460m?

From my experience with the Asus gaming laptop and my bro's feedback, he didn't get any GSOD so far and it is working flawlessly. The only problem (which is really normal for such a powerful machine) is that the power supply charger gets hot when doing intensive tasks like gaming. I think this kind of problem is present in all powerful laptops though I'm not so sure.

5870 is more powerful but I advised my bro to get GTX 460 because it's cooler and I always preferred Nvidia's driver support over ATI's. The choice is yours really.

Just noticed something, all of the ASUS laptops at Amazon have windows home...Should they not have 7 if they are new? Does it really matter?

That's actually Windows 7 Home Premium. They actually missed the "7" part :P and it's 64 bit so it's the latest Operation System you could have.

They likely have Windows 7 Home Premium, but you can link it here if you are unsure.

I've heard the games I want to run arnt very "GPU intensive" but depend on the CPU more. WoW, Diablo3-who knows, not out, and The Old Republic. I'll be running other games, just want to make sure games like those can be maxed out.

The CPU we have is an i7 CPU which has 4 cores and 8 threads. The Turbo-boost feature will overclock automatically to 2.93 GHz which is enough for all of those games so you don't need to worry.

Well I'm looking at two models now. Don't know how to link. ASUS G73JH-X5 Republic of Gamers , ASUS G73JW-XA1 Republic of Gamers. Same except for graphics card.

The X5 model has slower CPU (A bit slower; Turbo-Boost up to 2.8GHz while the XA1 goes upto 2.93) and slower RAM (1066 compared to 1333 but this is not important) and less HDD space (640GB compared to 750GB) but it has a faster GPU (5870 compared to GTX 460m) Hope this helps.

I thought they had the same cpu...Would you go with the 740QM? Thats the one I'm leaning towards. I'm thinking either GPU will work for my demands, plus the one with the better CPU has blu-ray drive...I dont think thats important for games, but it cant hurt.

Actually the one with the better GPU (Not CPU) has blu-ray drive (aka the X5 model). Both of them are very similar in specs and the difference is about $100.

Option #1:

1- Slightly faster CPU.

2- Slightly faster RAM.

3- Slightly slower GPU.

4- Slightly more HDD space.

5- DVD Drive.

6- @ $1450

Option #2:

1- Slightly slower CPU.

2- Slightly slower RAM.

3- Slightly faster GPU.

4- Slightly less HDD space.

5- Blu-ray Drive.

6- @ $1540

It's your choice :)

XXsKiTzOidXX
:P I would get the XA1 model (the one with GTX 460m) but I have my own reasons for that. Better GPU drivers, better CPU & RAM, more HDD space and I don't care about blu-ray drive. If you would sacrifice those for a better GPU, blu-ray drive and a $100 more then it's your choice. In all honesty both of them are good and I don't want to influence your purchase choice by my own preference. Just pick the one which seems more appealing to you.
