My BFG Geforce 6600 GT OC died on me so now I'm looking for a new card. I'm on a tight budget and I don't have Windows Vista, so no Directx 10 cards for me, yet.

I think the Nvidia 7 series cards are pretty affordable now. The 8 series were still in the 3-400+ range last time I checked Newegg.

8600GTS, you don't need DX10 to use it. 7600GT for AGP.

I have a PCI-e slot, sorry for not mentioning that earlier. I also have an Athlon 64 3200+ and 1 gig of RAM. Got a question about the 8600GTS. If I don't use Windows Vista (DX10) does that mean I won't be using it to its full potential, like certain features won't be available such as dynamic lighting and longer view distances?

Ok, what's wrong with the 8600GTS? I got the 8600GTS and it maxed out Bioshock with no lag at all playing in res 1360X768. I say if you're on a budget "mastirofpuppets" get the 8600GTS...you'll still use the full capabilities of DX9 but just not DX10. The 8600GTS is a pretty solid card, it even maxes outFEAR: Extraction Point for me.

7600GT is the best bang for the $ for the 7series (7600GT+DX10 = 8600GT so same preformance from both cards) Although, I'm not sure you want to be upgrading to a 7600GT now since theres so many cards with better preformance. Maybe a 7900?

Definately the 8800GTS if you afford it. Also the 7600GT and 8600GT do not perform the same. The 8600 will perform 5-10 frames better in some older games. Also it performed really well in Bioshock and I'm assuming the 7600GT can't perform at the same level. The 7600 doesn't have DX10 either.

BFG offer lifetime warranties you should get it replaced even if you do get a new one, sell it on ebay to offset some of the cost!

dx10 cards work fine on winXP, i been using 8800GTX since it was first released and i use winxp, it just will run dx9 instead of dx10 thats all

but ofcourse u gotta have the right slot for whatever card u get, there is AGP, and PCI-E .. and some others which dont really matter like PCI

i have a 6600gt from BFG. I'm pretty sure yours has lifetime warranty, so, try to get it RMA'd. They might even send you a better card =-O

If PCI-E and you're OCing,XFX 8600GT,if not OCing,X1950GT.

If AGP,7600GT is the maximum you should go for AGP.

I guess it depends on how you look at it. Its about the same FPS/Preformance away from the 7900 as it is from the 7600... The 7600GT has been proven to have better framerates in older games (FEAR, FarCry, X3:Reunion, and CoH) but in certain games with shaders the 8600GT wins (Supreme Commander, Prey). I would say if you want a DX10 card, save a little longer and get a 8800GTS 320mb (very good card). 8600GTS in my eyes is a waste of money. Save a few more weeks and get $80 more and get the 8800GTS.

IE 7 has tabs and (At least for me) open's up MANY times faster than FF2 ever could on my PC.

Rollz, right now I'm using a ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 (ATI RADEON Xpress 200 Series (0x5954)), yes it's integrated. What I'm concerned about is if it's going to explode or die on me all of a sudden and it looks like a parasite on my motherboard. AND IF IT DIES MY MOTHERBOARD DIES WITH IT, right?

Well most ATi cards are power hungry but for the HD series the high end ones are the only good ones. The HD 2600XT is only worth it for HD playback just get a 8600GT if thats your price range.

riptoe222

I'm looking to buy a new card also. As far as I know (limited computer knowledge) I just have PCI. Does that mean I shouldn't buy something for PCI-E?

Looking at NVIDIA's 8800 GTS line, most say PCI-E--a few don't:

EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 320-P2-N811-AR Video Card
EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 320-P2-N815-AR Video Card
GIGABYTE GeForce 8800GTS GV-NX88S640H-RH Video Card
MSI GeForce 8800GTS NX8800GTS-T2D640E-HD OC Video Card
ASUS GeForce 8800GTS EN8800GTS/HTDP/640M Video Card
EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 640-P2-N821-AR Video Card

Would I have to chose from one of the above, and what's the difference (besides price) among them?

[QUOTE="LouieV13"][QUOTE="Swiftstrike5"]7600GT is the best bang for the $ for the 7series (7600GT+DX10 = 8600GT so same preformance from both cards) Although, I'm not sure you want to be upgrading to a 7600GT now since theres so many cards with better preformance. Maybe a 7900?sabbath2gamer

Your kidding right? The 8600GT doesnt perform like a 7600GT it performs a little under the 7900GS... its alot better than the 7600GT

Save a few more weeks and get $80 more and get the 8800GTS.

heh id like to see some benchies that show the 7600GT gets better FPS than the 8600GT with new drivers

Justexactlywhatiwasgonnasay,8600GTwithnewerdriverscomesclosetoX1950GT.

I hope the people who own and operate mozilla jump off a bridge and die :P

the only reason i like it is because of tabs and it opens up fatser than ie...AND ALSO whats wrong with mozilla its alright...

ie7 opens way faster than firefox
