hi, i got all my hardwares today and installed it. when i turned on the pc for the first time a tiny smoke came out for like 1 second above the RAM. i think it was from fan power thingy...everything else is working except the fan that came with the processor....what should i do??? do i need to return the motherbooard and cpu or just one? help. what do u think went wrong? was it my power supply which cost like 16 bucks? it says it supports 580w.

A 16$ 500w psu = yea thats gonna crap out on you. Just get a decent psu and a new fan cause it seemed it crapped out.

So everything is working fine except your processor fan...but it's not spinning? How does your machine not overheat?

Try the CPU fan on a different 3pin on the motherboard.

The fourth pin isn't really needed. There should be a little extra space on the connector so it fits right on there just like a 3-pin connector.

Yea get a new psu. Any FSP, ThermalTake, OCZ, Corsair, Xclio, etc are good and remember! Wattage means almost nothing! a 350w psu could run a 8800GTS with enough +12v amps! Its the +12v amps that are the main thing! Just make sure if you have a card higher than a 7900 / X1950 get a 400w+. For a 8800GTS you will need 28 - 36a on the combined +12v rails. Usually PSU's with four +12v rails will handle any card as long as two of them have 18a and the rest have 16a thats still a great psu. I have the ThermalTake Toughpower 750w it has enough power to SLi 8800GTX's but whats your budget on a psu cause it was 170$ for me :P

I doubt you need one for this problem, but I wouldn't trust my rig on a $16 power supply. What probably happened was a piece of plastic had chipped off the fan connector or something, and cause a short.

The smoke could have come from just about anything. Maybe its the cheap $16 power supply, steam from a drop of sweat, rubber, silicon, etc.

I recommend getting something better than a $16 PSU... really... I suggest getting a PC power and cooling before OCZ asimilates them. The PSU that I got was just screaming quality... I haven't actually used it yet but its very heavy, really good paint job, the metal covers aren't flimsy or lose, etc.

It sounds like it was PROBABLY a short created by connecting the wrong pin. If everything is working fine now, don't worry about it.. you may have gotten lucky and not actually fried anything. Just keep an eye on it and don't leave it on when you leave for the next week.
