pingtest.net i get 0-1ms on att dsl, and like 11ms on comcast xtreme 50. DOCSIS is poop for that. Which is why I have all my gaimz go through a DSL line. pfsense firewall rules are mlg

i meant verizon's LTE, for cell phones. If you have a grandfathered unlimited with an LTE phone, there are no caps. Speeds are very fast. On ATT lte's, I tethered to my laptop. I was getting 31ms to 4.2.2.1, which is incredibly low for wireless. ofc at&t unlimited grandfathered users are capped to 5 gigs, unless you do some imei trickery, or so i've heard. Never botherd since I don't need to use that much data.

So you could just use that for your main connection, or shell out $$$ for a normal home plan from verizon/att or whoever

speeds will be faster than your dsl connection for sure, for gaming it will be worse ofc.

I'm moving soon too into an apartment complex with FIOS :D Goodbye Qwest and your 1.5mbps speeds, couldn't be happier to be rid of you. Granted not many people besides myself are very active online (the most bandwidth intensive thing any of my live-ins do is YouTube and Hulu, and they're usually not around anyway) but that's still no excuse to have to put up with speeds satellite internet can match.

4 mbps is slow? I'm not sure what the maximum speed is with my connection, but when I'm downloading things, I never get more than 1.5-2 mbps tops. And I do plenty of online gaming, with zero lag.

you sure you are not getting confused with Mb/s and MB/s?
your browser tells you your speeds in MB/s
ISPs rate in Mb/s
so his max theoritical dl is 500 kB/s

Maybe I am confused, then. What's the difference between a capital and a lower case b?

Thats what living out in the county with nothing but corn and cows around gets you. :( I feel like I am back in the 90s when I had 56k but its still alittle faster download speed than that lol.

I have centurylink as well here in Virginia. Our down is 5Mb/s, up is .75Mb/s. We tried the cable out here, through jet broad band. The highest speed was 10Mb/s down, but the up was only .5Mb/s. That broke it for me, i use my slingbox and .75 was barely enough sometimes, .5 is just way too low. On top of that the DSL was much more stable. I guess the phone infrastructure is better than the cable in my area. Unless I am downloading a huge file 5Mb/s is fast enough for me. i would not complain about it being faster, but I need the upload to at least be as fast as DSL.

Yeah, and in case you don't know 1 Byte = 8 bits. So a 4Mbit connection is only 0.5MB/s download

A normal local connection. £11.50 a month and due to be increased to 120Mb/s sometime in the next 6 months, unlimited use and no large file capping.

2123407061.png

Not too bad considering I'm outside Glasgow in Scotland and the server is in Wellington, New Zealand. Can't get one much further away :)
