So, I've been itching to play an RPG for some time now and I need some advice. Here's what I have played and am tired of..more of less:

Oblivion, The Witcher (Demo...I'm waiting for enhanced version but will buy eventually), pretty much any current MMORPG (with nothing in development that looks interesting), Jade Empire...and Fable.

I like to have fairly in depth character customization and interesting story and quests. Also, games with moddability are a plus. I was looking at NWN2, but I never played the first and I'm afraid I won't understand jack.

i'm 99% sure that having played nwn is not necessary to understand what's going on in nwn2. so i'd go with nwn2.

also, if you don't mind getting older games, baldur's gate 2 is freaking awesome. i'm sure many will tell you to get vampire: the masquerade - bloodlines. i have my reservations in recommending it but many believe it to be one of the best rpgs of all time. also, mass effect is coming out in may.

Yeah, you don't need to know anything about NWN at all to enjoy NWN2 - the stories have nothing in common. NWN2 hasn't really jumped out on the moddability level yet, but give it time and hopefully it will. The dev kit is way less user friendly than the original so you won't find the multitude of great user mods. If you haven't played the original maybe you should give it a shot. What a great game. NWN2 is great too, though.

If you're waiting on the Witcher to release the enhanced game to buy, you don't really have to. They said that people who buy the game now will get a free upgrade once the enhanced goes live. I don't have a link off the top of my head but I'm pretty sure that's right.

I'm with fireandcloud, too. Do yourself a favor and buy Baldur's Gate and BG2 and play those. I'm recently replaying 1 and you don't even notice the old graphics after a bit. It's such a good set of games. Icewind Dale I and II and Planescape: Torment are all awesome. You can play them all on Gametap for 10 bucks a month, too.

If you can stand buggy games, Gothic III might be a good one, although there isn't much to character customization.

Vampire: the masquerade I wouldn't say is the best rpg in the world. But it does get points for being based on whitewolf's world of darkness, and it really feels like an immersive experience. So I recommend that. For rpg on pc if you;ve played those new rpgs, then its a pretty easy answer play neverwinter nights. It has a learning curve, but as soon as you get the hang of it its really good. Either one of the Neverwinter nights will do. You should try the first one as well. Not because its necessary, but just because its fairly cheap and theres great modules you can download and play on either one. They both have a farily large community.

Also if you really don;t mind playing an old game. I suggest planescape. Its hard to find a copy of it now a days. But you can try it out for a month on gametap for just 99 cents. Baldurs gate 1 and 2 as well as icewind dale series is on gametap as well.

Gametap huh? I never thought of that. I was actually looking into playing the BG series and I think I might just have to now. Thanks
