Whoa....that is allI have to say about the current state of affairs with gaming. It seems to me that this new generation of games is pushing out some stellar titles. Remember the days of being terribly dissapointed by hyped up games? ( need i mention shaq fu or The getaway?) With the last year gamespot has handed out more editor choice awards then any previous year. It seems like the community can anticipate the quality of a game months in advance....all the big companies seem to be delivering wat they promised....the only exception i can think of is the recent semi-blunder of ubisoft's Assassin's Creed....cough cough Halo3.And even that wasnt that bad in the whole scheme of things. So is it me or are games getting sick(crysis)? I for one am so excited for wat developers are going to do next>/ Why are companies not pushing out as much crap as they used to? Wat happend to make the quality soo good?

WATCH ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, IT IS THE GREATEST SHOW EVER MADE. PERIOD.

In the old days igaming used to be this thing little kids would do. No one took it seriously. But, now ppl see the huge-azz market and want to make huge-azz games, so y'know... yeah.

And yeah gaming is pretty amazing nowadays.

I think we're in a glut of high-quality games right now, and that will level out after christmas. I know there's a bunch of high-profile games due out in 2008 (StarCraft2, Fallout 3, Spore) but I don't think we'll see what we saw this year. Also, GS might be handing out high marks a little too easily.

Keep in mind the epic production values that now go into AAA games, and the number of companies that are able to shell out the cash. The industry is just expanding and the rate of big money game production increasing. It will eventually reach its carrying capacity when revenues for individual titles suffer because of the shear market glut.

From an optimistic POV, maybe at last some of the developers & publishers are finally realising that us, the games buyers, are not falling for the hype like we used to (ok, some do lol). If they produce quality products we'll buy from them again & again. If they push s**t upon us we won't.

Obviously, not every game is suitable for everyone (eg: I wasn't impressed with Halo but lots were, I enjoyed C&C3 but lots whined about it) but if the game delivers more or less what is promised then I say "well done" & I will spend my $s with them.

Also there is a lot more info' available now, thanks to the internet, & there are so many reviews & features available on new games that just about anyone in the world should be able to get an idea whether it's their kinda thing b4 they buy it.

This year I'm struggling (timewise) to play the games I've got & thereare still some I've yet to buy (Stalker, Crysis, Uni at War, Witcher & more)!

All in all an excellent year & a good advert' for the PC. Next year should be amazing, we've already got new engines that will get more developed & optimized & of course by next year the dev's should have worked out how to use DX10!

FINALLY, this is the first time i have seen a thread about the state of pc gaming, and how things are just getting good. so many people keep saying how pc gaming is declining and its just bull. i have recently bought CoD4, company of heroes opposing front, WiC and gears of war (the latter still not working on my pc) and they are all awesome games, although after my initial 4 hour play time on gears, it now just crashes so im waiting for a patch. the technology has come such a long way and the pc is the most powerful gaming machine out there, if you have the money to build a good enough one. i personally cant wait for next year simply because of starcraft 2, but hey, im a total starcraft fanboy so yeah....

I think it depends on what kind of games you enjoy. I'm very happy with the state of strategy games and there's TONS of high qualitly FPS games out at the moment. The Witcher came in under the radar and helped keep it from being a down year when it comes to rpg's and it's nice that NW Nights got patched up... but still a little weak on the RPG front, I think. Not a great deal in racing gaming goodness either, and the sports game market is all but dead on PC thanks to EA and Sega snatching up exclusive liscenses, killing the competition, and focusing 100% on consoles. There's never been a worse time to be a PC sports gaming fan. Maybe an indie developer will come out with some great customizable engines for our favorite sports to compete with Madden, Tiger Woods, NHL, MLB, etc. I can only hope :(

Yeah, this was a really decent year for PC gamers. Crysis, CoD4, The Witcher, Mask of the Betrayer, UT3, Hellgate London, Tabula Rasa, World in Conflict, and a dozen other games I can't think of right now; all great.

Being a PC gamer is good this year, but not especially. Well, I guess I'm saying that yeah, it's awesome to be a gamer period at Xmas. Basically we got +1 Witcher but -1 Mass Effect (break even with consoles). CoD4, UT3, Gears, Bioshock, CnC3 all break even with consoles. +1 STALKER but -1 Halo 3 (break even). +0.5 Orange Box but -0.5 Creed come in Feb. (Creed delayed but Orange Box mostly old hat material) Then there's what? An Extreme Commander expansion and World in Conflict. Those two together probably earn a +1, but I have to admit there is no real console game I'm jealous of this Xmas (save Mass Effect). Seriosly, we pay more for hardware and get better graphics in return. We still have the trusty mouse and keyboard. Overall though, it's just a good time to be a gamer, not so much a PC gamer. We don't have much on the consoles but Crysis (which personally I am waiting to buy).
