I just got in all the new components for a new computer - a solid, fast (but not bleeding edge) build.

I still have my XP disks I can install on it. Or I can pick up a Vista OEM for a hundred bucks.

Are the DX10 features worth the extra frame-rate drops in vista? (I don't care about framerate too much, as long as my games aren't running jaggy)

vista now performs in games as good as or better than xp, if you got 2+ ( 4 gigs = win ) gigs of ram, go vista 64 bit and nvr look back at XP.

Vista is pretty good now ... plus win xp isn't supported any longer so you might as well go with the new.

XP is still supported, and will be for years. MS just quit selling it.

But like others have said Vista is actually quite good. You could just install XP though now, and later add Vista and dual boot.

XP for free vs $100 for vista...though choice. Anyways, I had Vista for about two weeks and I simply could not stand it, ever since I've switched back to XP, I have had no crashes and my game performance has significantly improved.

You and I have quite similar PC specs

I'm undecided because I just spent a grand on a new comp so don't mind droppin the extra cash on the new OS - I hear crysis dx10 is kickass (though I don't know if my build would run it that well anyways with those features), and I wonder how much future titles like dragon age and whatnot will support it. It would really be upgrading only for dx10. Before you downgraded did you check dx10 features?

I enjoy Vista, myself. I like it a lot more than XP. XP just feels stale and inferior. I've had my problems with Vista in the past, but SP1 seemed to cure, as far as I can tell, everything that was making Vista unstable.

Yup, Vista is no longer that bad OS whos killing people.. As long as your PC can handle ''hog OS'' then you will do fine with VISTA and actually i'd say go with it especially if you are having new PC

Get Vista if you want to see eyecandy in your games...that is if your system can handle it.

I like XP because it's stable and it's what I'm used to.

However, Vista is going to be Microsoft's flagship OS for the next several years - like it or not. Not to mention the added bonus of DirectX10 (which makes games look amazing).

I will say however, the stability of Vista is somewhat... Well... Questionable.

There are a lot of problems with Vista. It is unstable, it is a system hog, it doesn't support all the drivers, it has problems running a lot of older and even newer games and programs... Last but not least it is nothing but decorated XP all over again. Everything is just the same only in different locations. I was amazed how little work Microsoft did with it. Seriously Vista still sucks and SP1 made things even worse. Sorry but I cannot recomenbed an OS as bad as Vista. Save your money and don't even think of buying Vista. I uninstalled Vista three days after install. Don't make the same mistake.

Yeah, people must really change their idea about VISTA... Only people we wouldnt recommend to go with Vista, those who have weak/old setups that cant handle such hog OS !!

It doesnt "hog", Vista uses so much ram because it precatches everything. Witch makes everything load much faster.

Crysis in DX9 using the Very High tweak looks virtually identical to very high in DX10, but it runs about 15-20% faster. As of now, there is absolutely no use for DX10, I have a feeling at this point it is really just a gimmick to try to get gamers to switch to Vista.

well im not too sure about that that could just be MS's excuse for letting to OS hog alot of RAM, i dont see the need to precache everything though.

If it was about prechaching everything or not, the conclusion is Vista needs good amount of RAM unlike XP !!

Vista is more stable than XP, It has very good driver support, runs old stuff just fine.

And one more thing you actually wrote: "Last but not least it is nothing but decorated XP all over again"

Well that quote don't make sence at all if one read your post, you're saying XP is better than Vista, then you say Vista is the same as XP? :w00t:

If Vista act's funny it's about the one behind the screen and keyboard not the OS fault.

People, people, people, if you are happy with XP just stay with it, but for a new rig why not get the newer, and better looki'n OS?

Vista recource hog? Yeah it is, but what does it matter?, any new PC will run it fine anyway.

I'd stick with XP if you can install it for free. I've only used Vista a little bit, but from what I've seen it is a major resource hog. It takes forever to load anything. I think it will be quite a while before we see most games become Vista only, so to me it would make more sense to stick to XP especially if it's free.

Vista all the way. I've never had a single problem with it. It runs smooth, loads things fast and is just better looking. The only reason why I can see anyone complain about Vista would be because they either bought it when it first came out and it was buggy or they have a slower computer.

with vista, i was getting all these crash dumps, and it was slowing my pc down alot. and it wouldn't let me acitvate it, although it's activated on 2 other pc's. i went back to XP and it's just faster overall. i do have 2 gigs of ram though.

Vista definitely isn't FASTER than XP (and probably never will be), but it is for the most part even in performance. If you're buying a new OS, go ahead and spring for Vista.. if you've already got XP though, there isn't much reason to go out of your way and upgrade (yet). Vista does seem more resistant to the degradation over years that XP suffered, though.

If you have a good enough PC and video card that supports DX10 and have 2+gb of ram, get Vista 64-bit. Otherwise, stay with XP. Screw 32-bit Vista.

XP > Vista anyday. Helbrec

sry to pick on you helbrec, but people that do this make me angry, you see a list of reasons why these 15 people think that vista is better and then you say

XP > Vista

wow, a lot of effort went into that didnt it, we're on here because we want your reason why you think it is better or worse,

in my opinion, vista. i love it, besides a few issues i had when i installed it, its been great, just do the updates whenever you can and they have seemed to fix all of the problems i have ever heard of with this os, and anyone that says 'there arent any drivers for vista' they dont know what they're talking about, i have installed two or three pieces of hardware each two years old, one said NO 64 BIT SUPPORT, i get on there website, what do you know, a patch driver for vista x64, i have never had a game that doesnt run on it, starcraft even runs fine, a ten year old game, vista home premium x64, the one everyone says has no support. i think most of the problems come in when people try to upgrade from xp 32bit to vista x64, and dont realize they arent compatible, then ask ' why didnt it work?? its vista, its no good' and does anyone think in 6 months from now, 1 year, 2 years from now, any company is going to be updating drivers for a 6 year old OS??

if your going with a new build, go vista all the way, x64, 4 to 8gigs of ram!!

I'd go with Vista BUT you can always do a dual boot setup and have XP and vista together. Games run about the same on XP x64 and vista x64, but in some XP, comes out on top by a little bit (crysis, for example). It mostly depends on what interface you like most, both are stable... yet vista does have Dx10, which will improve over the next few years.
