The only kid friendly online game is Disney's ToonTown. You have quests, or "Toontasks" you complete. You can play a free trial, but to get the full experience you need to paya fee. $9.99 a month, $49.99 every 6 months, or $79.99 every year. I've been playing it for three years and I like it.
As for totally free online games, there is Pirates of the Caribbean online. Another Disney game. And if you search the net, I'm sure there are other free online games too.
You could always get him hooked on crack now. . .I mean. . .EverCrack. . .Quest. . .EverQuest. . .
I've played WoW for a brief time, and I don't recall anything bad on there. . .
You may want to try the game out for a month yourself, so you know what you may be getting them into.
Well, I would recommend WoW but you said free online. Btw...WoW is not addictive any more than other games; people just have addictive personalities. If your son is pretty good about the amount of time he spends playing games, then get WoW. Plus, youre his parent. The minute it gets in excess you can pull the plug.
As for free online, I think any number of RTS games would be good. I really like C&C Generals, and you can buy it with expansion for about 20 bucks now. You could also get C&C: THe First decade for like 30 which has about 10 games they could play online.
Well, you could get Oblivion and just get some online servermods for it. . .
Guild Wars would be good for them. It's free, not too graphic intensive, and whenever you exit a town, you enter the outside, like a normal game, but it'sa copy just for you and your party. It's just to eliminate the PKers and Item Stealers, and also to make it feel more like your own adventure, and not just a MMO.
I'd say take that for a spin, just make sure that you both have the same version (Like both have Guild Wars: Factions) or whatnot. You only need the game or an expansion, it'll work with any.
You could try something like the original Neverwinter Nights. It's a fairly old game so it wouldn't be too expensive buying the boxes and it would provide a private haven for your children to play in.
I'd be very leery letting a 10 year old play a public game like WoW. When my 9 year old nephew comes over I let him play City of Heroes on my account but the very first thing I do is turn of all public chat and /hide his character so he won't receive /tells from strangers. City of Heroes has a fairly mature community too unlike, say, WoW but there's always going to be a few bad apples no matter where you're at.
I'd also be wary of free games like Runescape. If the behavior in a paid MMORPG can be as bad as it sometimes is I can't imagine the kind of garbage that goes on in a free MMORPG.
Your best bet would be something that's strictly peer-to-peer like Neverwinter Nights, Titan Quest, etc.
is there a game like oblivion that has the private online facility? So I could set up a game that the other could join and then theres just the 2 playing?English_DeathWell, I would recommend Diablo II, but it is rated M, and I assume you wouldn't want your child playing it. Perhaps you could look into Titan Quest. I do not know if it contains any sort of inappropriate content, but it is rated T, just like Oblivion (actually, Oblivion's rating got changed to M, but thats another matter entirely). Although it played from an isometric view, it is a role-playing game focused on questing and building up a character. The online is just as you described, so you will be able to set up a room and have the two kids play together.

Also, I am having trouble with Gamespot, so if I end up having multiple posts, I apologize.
I really don't know too much about age apropriateness, considering my parents were pretty open with me (watching R movies at 8 ftw). It all depends on how into games your kid is, at age 10 I was playing BG1 and Fallout 2 so pretty advanced =) as well as how sheltered he is.
When I played WoW (1.5 years ago =P) there were a couple in my raiding guild, and their son was around 7 and had a lv60 priest. Suffice to say he was pretty bad and could never keep me up as a warrior, but he was nice and we were all very understanding towards him and his parents.
What I'm trying to say is 10yrs is old enough for WoW, just be careful who you run in contact with. Like any online game there will always be people who will disrupt your otherwise positive experience. Also it seems like a pretty good game into with family, I know my experience with WoW would have been a lot worse if I didn't have all the friends I did.
I think a 10 year old could almost play WoW but if he could, then he'd get massively addicted so it's not such a great idea
You shouldn't underestimate kids though, lots of 10-11 year olds play CS online
kyrieee
haha yeah, and they're incredibly annoying. Shouting "Hay Guys" as soon as they come in to the server, with their super high pitched voice. Yeah, us people from the [SIG] clan just ban them on sight :P
To answer the OP's question, the only thing that comes to mind is Runescape, but it's not really that good. I would have them pick something old up, like Dungeon Siege or something like that.
if you love your kid, mate, you shouldn't let him play WoW or any other adult mmorpgs. it's not about trusting your kid or anything -- your kid is only 10, for god's sake, and getting mingled with those communities -- most of them exceedingly rudeand unfriendly -- is bound to affect your kid. not to mention the addictive nature of these games.
i'm not telling you how to be a dad....but if you know what's good for a still growing kid, you won't let them play those. why not try sports? or books? or spend some quality time together as a family?
Yea playing WoW at a young age will turn your kid into a elitest jerk-off. I hate those people. "LULZ You are 70 and you dont have teh t6?? nuub!!1"if you love your kid, mate, you shouldn't let him play WoW or any other adult mmorpgs. it's not about trusting your kid or anything -- your kid is only 10, for god's sake, and getting mingled with those communities -- most of them exceedingly rudeand unfriendly -- is bound to affect your kid. not to mention the addictive nature of these games.

Some great suggestions here every body.
I think I am heading towards games that have no interaction with anyone other than just the 2 lads. So peer to peer looks to be the safest way at the moment. Neverwinter looks like it may give what they will enjoy. But then again they enjoy all games fo C&C and the Lord of the Rings RTS games may be the way forward.
What The lads want is to be able to play in a window so they can run the web cams to see and speak to each other. They only play on Wednesday nghts and some times on a saturday and sunday.
But as I said there are some great suggestions here. Keep them coming.
