I've been getting the itch to play some online multiplayer on my PC. I was wondering if anybody knew of some titles (any genre) that have big communities and a lot of online-gamers still (please exclude console ports).

Here are games I know that you can still find a lot of online-multiplayer users:

1. Starcraft Broodwar (and any Blizzard released game after that - especially WoW).

2. Team Fortress 2

3. Company of Heroes (RTS)

Umm... do you mean including new games? Or just old games that have kept their online communities.

of older games... Warcraft 3 still has a huge following. Its also helped by DotA, technically a custom map but really a seperate game using the WC3 map creation engine, which has a huge community which I believe is still growing

Those are all good, though I'm not sure how well UT2K4 is still doing.

Nice...I like UT. There's a good title to add to my list. Didn't know there was still a lot of online-support/users for that game.

I should have noted to exclude console ports (MW2).

UT2k4 is on its last set of legs in terms of community population.

The only game 2 games you need to get are Counter Strike 1.6 and Source, biggest communities out there imo, you can literally play 40 different types of games in cs.

Dawn of War 2 is a pretty good RTS if you don't mind the lack of base building. Upcoming games: Bad Company 2 (I know you exclude console ports but still, I don't really look at this as a console port given the dedicated servers and whatnot), and Supreme Commander 2.

Well best FPS of all time is a huge exaggeration, but it was still pretty fun.

The reason your not getting as much replies as you want is because most of them are to busy enjoying them ;)

I was hoping more obscure titles would come up in this thread. So far, for the most part, all we got is stuff most people already know about.

StarCraft Original is still going, to a reasonable extent. I think it's pretty stupid that people are mentioning games released in the last five years. I mean, for example, obviously Team Fortress 2, being the brilliant and fairly recent game that it is, will have a large user base, right? Command and Conquer Generals (although I despise it greatly), seems to be quite active. Half-Life 2 deathmatch. Unreal Tournament. Enough servers for a good game or two. Unreal Tournament 2004 is doing fine, plenty of servers IMO Quake III Arena (not including Quake Live) See Unreal Tournament.
