Eve Online comes to mind, but here's a pretty good list of mmo's out there, anything under the sci-fi category should be safe:

Well Eve Online is out as he doesn't like ships.
Quite honestly, atm your best bet is Tabula Rasa. Also keep an eye out for Stargate, Star Trek, and the KOTOR mmos, but you'll be waiting quite a while for them.
You can also try Anarchy Online, I hear it's free, but I don't know the particulars.
[QUOTE="jimmyjammer69"]Ok, it's time to own up, I've never played an online RPG. I'm completely willing to be converted, but I'm just not into the whole beardy fantasy thing, and Japanese cutesy graphics just leave me cold. Also, space ships are a big turn off. So... what does that leave me with? SEANMCAD
sadly its rare that RPG's move outside of the fantasy/sciFi relm even though I think such a move would be amazing!
Back in the day we played a spy pen and paper RPG for a little while. I liked the idea.
broken down to its true elements the Sims is actually a great example of an RPG but becuase characters do not have "levels" its often not look at as such.
oh, you'd probably like this then: The Agency
Personally I'd love to see a cyberpunk (Id even settle for shadowrun) or post-apocalyptic mmo.

my idea of CRPG probably isn't quite in line with yours (you're also a p&p player notwithstanding), however, there're leveling up in The Sims. Almost everything other than basic phyisological motion needs practice, getting Exp and then advancing: cooking, playing piano and etc. you need to level up abilities to live better and have better career and so on.
Thanks for the response guys. Anarchy Online seems pretty close to what I was looking for. If the economy is well developed, which it seems to be as far as I've read, this may be the game for me. Don't know if there's a possibility of buying property in game too, but that would be awesome.
It would be nice to see developers taking a few more risks - not everybody likes hulking barbarians, just as not everybody gets put off by them. From what I've heard, the one constant for a great MMO would be the opportunity for real development and a feeling of accomplishment, rather then endless levelling-up.
Thanks again - any more recommendations would be very welcome :)
