That's a pretty shocking figure! Obviously this does not represent all games or regions but I think it gives a good insight as to why so many devs make their games for consoles first and then just port them to the PC.

EDIT: Please note that Steam sales are NOT counted in this figure so its pretty wrong.

Can a mod please close this topic as it does not serve its purpose!

It could also be due to the flak from all of the known bugs/issues with the game. I was going to be purchasing Fallout NV first day but after coming come from work and seeing the threads of peoples misfortune I decided against it. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

The console market is huge, not really surprised.

But its buggy on all platforms, so that reason doesent make sense as to why only 10% of the sales would be on the PC.

They've never done so from what i can recall and you need steam to even play the game on PC. So it's very likely that many bought it straight of steam instead of the "retail" version.

Does Steam no release their sales figures?

They release earning and revenue but don't specifically release game numbers. The publisher may but Valve personally doesn't. Seeing how NV is tied to Steam and most of these figures are usually retail only, it may be a bit skewed.

I think it's safe to assume that they left digital distribution out of that study. Perhaps when consoles get with the times we'll get an accurate comparison.

The console versions have bugs too and I'm not even sure they've been patched like the PC versions have. The game has bugs, that's for sure, but it's very much playable. The only 'broken' game I've ever played was Bloodlines, to be honest. You literally couldn't finish it at frist. Good game though.

Yea its been mentioned here already but direct to drive services generally aren't counted in terms of sales figures. And they're becoming ever more popular among PC gamers.

Not this old chestnut again ...... firstly I would take a breakdown like that with a truck load of salt. Secondly as far as I am aware Steam does not release sales numbers to ANY chart tracking organisation so it is fair to say that those numbers do not count steam purchasers. I live in the UK and I bought Fallout NV but I purchased it via steam. I believe 80% of PC game sales are via digital distributors like steam these days. So when you see rubbish like "oh noes only 10% of fallout purchasers were on PC boxed retail" remember they are ignoring the other 80% that bought it digitally.

Now by all accounts Fallout NV has been flying off the steam virtual servers, it is still in the number 1 spot nearly a week after it's release handsomely beating down the latest COD game that is available for pre-order.

Console gaming is more prominent than PC gaming in the UK.

Also Digital Download. Anyway with that facts considered Fallout 3 did way better on consoles. I think that only 20% of Fallout 3 sales were on PC, which is disappointing considering Fallout started out as a PC franchise. Also the fact that it's ten times better on PC when mods are considered.

Yes, FO NV was a day one buy for me, after reading so many user reviews about how is the game is buggy, I decided just to wait for patches & mods to fix these issues out. I mean offcourse with such a huge open world game, there gotta be limitless number of bugs that makes the game unplayable.

I don't think the community is very strong in the UK, it is more an Wii60 territory than anything else. In the rest of europe it should sell a lot better, also the sales will probably be much larger in DD. As of now Steam says it has 38000 people playing it, even so it should be smaller than console sales.

People like FO3 but playing it makes me realize that is mainly a console rpg, having to relly on a PIP boy for interface and the very few action commands that the keyboard support makes it obvious.

Well, I'd imagine it's more like 15-20% including Steam sales. Which is a pretty damn good figure. I'd imagine PS3 got 20-30% and the rest for XBOX 360.

I wouldn't put too much faith in that 38,000 number that you see on the steam stats, that only records those actively playing with steam online. Steam just passed 30 million accounts yet the online stats show only 2 - 3 million are ever online. A lot of people just use steam to register their product and prefer to play it in off line mode especially when you consider Fallout NV is a single player game only (so there is no need to be on line).

I know personally I only put steam in online mode to check the latest deals of the day then go into off line mode and play my games (no I really couldn't give a toss about steam achievements or any kind of achievements). So the 38,000 figure again is not an accurate reflection of how many people bought Fallout NV.

At the end of the day Fallout 3 must have been a success on the PC because they released Fallout NV. I believe Fallout NV has been a success and we will see another fallout on the PC. That is what matters at the end of the day, we can talk figures and percentages as much as we like none of us really know the true picture.

Why would you go out of your way to put Steam in offline mode? I mean most people always have an Ethernet cable plugged into their PC anyway.

Why would I want to be online with steam ? I don't play multi player games, nor do I care about achievements. So there really is no need for me to be online with steam. I wouldn't say it is that much of an arduous task to put steam in off line mode.

But doesent Steam by default launch in online mode when you try to run one of its games? I'm not complaining, I am just curious why you do it.

Steam launches in whatever mode you last had it set too. So if you had steam set to "off line" mode when you last shut it down it stays in off line mode when you start it up again. It will stay in off line mode till you tell it to go into on line mode.

I have had steam running in off line mode for weeks on end because I am not a multiplayer gamer. I begrudingly accept online authentication (because I have no choice in the matter) and so I just use steam for that. I have no interest in any of the "online features" so I don't use online mode, I didn't realise this was such a revelation to be honest.

The UK is very much a mirror image to the US in terms of game sales. Consoles are very prominent on the retail scene.

The problem then, in tracking PC game sales, is two-fold.

1. The retail outlets that DO cater to PC gaming are not counted. Here in the states, for example, Walmart and amazon, the two biggest PC game retailers are not included in most figures.

2. The latest data estimates that 50-70% of PC games are bought digitally now a days, and those digital market places do not release game sales figures.

There's no doubt in my mind that the PC probably did around as good as the PS3 in the UK in terms of FNV sales. I'm going to guess that PC smoked both consoles in continental Europe, probably did very well in Australia, andAsiathough (with the exception of Japan - if it even was released there) :)

Now add ot that the fact the publishers and developers make MORE money per digital sale than per retail sale and in terms of pure profit, I think the Pc can do more than stand on it's own. this makes sense, because if it wasn't so, no one would bother making PC games, but almost anyone who is anyone in the industry does.

Metro 2033 sold more on pc than 360. Rember when THQ said that most metro sales on pc were done through digital distribution that sales numbers are not counted? Same for Battlefiled bad company 2. retail sales in uk were only 300.000 but thanks to digital distrybution it sold more than 2 million on pc. Also why Greece (the country that i live) is not counted? why they release sales numbers for all the countrys all over the world, and release number only from uk and us?

Yeah I think if you include DD it would be closer to 20%

It's not massive like the 360 but it's still way too big of a number to ignore.

38 000 is extremely disappointing, considering you have to be on steam to play the game. That means that no one outside of those 38 000 is playing the game legally now, which I'm sure is small compared to the console numbers.
