Nvidia allegedly working on dual-GPU, GK110-based GTX 790

By Tim Schiesser

2013-08-23-image-3.jpg

Most of Nvidia's GeForce GPU lines of the past few years have included a dual-GPU model, and it seems the 700 series will be no exception. Sources have told VideoCardz that Nvidia is working on a new high-end graphics card, most likely the GeForce GTX 790, designed as a response to AMD's upcoming 'Hawaii' graphics cards. The GTX 790 is said to include two of Nvidia's top-end GK110 GPUs, used on the GTX Titan and GTX 780.

VideoCardz are expecting that this GTX 790 would not cost more than $1000, potentially slotting into the price bracket currently occupied by the Titan. Nvidia would then slightly lower the prices of their other GK110-based cards to even out pricing across the range.

However, there's also a less likely possibility that this new high-end card from Nvidia will feature just a single, fully enabled GK110 GPU, to make it something along the lines of a GeForce GTX Titan successor. The GK110 chip features 2,880 CUDA cores on the die, although with the Titan just 2,688 of the cores are enabled; a Titan successor with a fully enabled GK110 would harness all the CUDA cores for additional processing power.

Also, VideoCardz have allegedly heard from manufacturers that Nvidia's next range of cards, the 'Maxwell' GeForce 800 series, will launch in Q1 2014. If their sources are correct, the sooner-than-expected launch may mean we won't see a 20nm process utilized for the GPUs. TSMC will not be capable of mass producing 20nm chips until June 2014, so either 20nm 800 series GPUs are off the cards, or there will be graphics card shortages.

While these reports are just rumors at this stage, it seems likely that we'll see a dual-GPU 700 series card hit the market soon, especially as we edge closer to AMD's next generation GPU product launch. Hopefully an official announcement from Nvidia isn't too far away.

Lol I would hope this isn't a single Gpu, as if Titan owners are mad enough at Nvidia releasing a successor to the card you bought not even a year later would be pretty ballsy. Especially since i'm prettty sure they said they wouldn't be releasing any new 700 series cards.

nope they are planning to flesh out the 700 series. if only a little. also their may or may not be a new flagship (likely a dual gpu and if thats the case titan owners will get pwned b/c their product will be inferior and cost more lololol)

also i have it on good authority (but not confirmed) maxwell is 20nm

If this is true (confirmation, not rumor) than the news went totallly under the radar (I havn't even heard a rumor for lowend kepler 2.0 cards, let alone confirmation from nvidia).

If Maxwell is releasing that early, it probably wont be 20nm.

You can't post stuff like this without a link and expect to be taken seriously.

I'm still hoping for a 760 ti.

I don't think that will happen. The 660ti, 760, 670, 680. and 770 are all within 25% of each other (I don't see how they could fit a 6th card in a tight bracket).

Instead of releasing a 760ti, they will most like drop the price of the 660ti/670/680 to clear stock and drop the price of the 770 around the time volanic island comes out

I think it's ridiculous that the price diff between 760 and 770 is $150. I may just get a 670. I'll wait for Volcanic and see how much prices drop.

Yeah $150 a big difference. I would rather pay a $50 difference ($300) and get either an overclocked 670 or 7970 boost

How much do you think it'll cost? Article said < $1000 but that's not clear enough for me.

Could be anywhere from $600-$900.

Thats only something amd would do. Its Nv's way of making bank and w.e their marketing is it works well enough for the consumers to pony up.

Not surprise if a 760ti would just popped up out of nowhere.

Never understood the need for dual gpu, why not just buy two seperate cards? There isn't a shortage of sli/cfx boards. Besides didn't the Titan outsell the 690?

Personally, I think these cards are being pumped out way too damn fast. That's technology, I suppose. Always progressing and dropping down in price once newer shit comes out but man, I see some current $1000 card owners being a little ticked off about this.
