ars technica had an open mic night on their forums. the subject was the current state of communtiy and population in swtor.

many users respond with stories of lapsing subs or folks genuinely bored with the game. and of course folks with open beliefs that its jsut in a slump:

Not suprising, the game sucks for a mmo, and has a very blinded and easy to please community. I used to post at the SWTOR forums when i played ,a nd those people are blind to everything, hell some even think the game is still growing, and that it still has 1.7 million subs. I resubbed the other day to check out 1.2 and unsubbed 1hr later. Its just not a good game, bland, boring, bad graphics, glitchy combat. The sooner this game dies the better.

It depends on the server. They opened too many at launch to keep the queues down. Of course a good number of people are going to unsub after playing the game for a while so that leaves servers with fewer people. They need to do server transfers but then all the idiots who just love to hate will be going on about how the game is fail/dead/going F2P.

My servers always have a good number of people. I really wish people would get off of Biowares d%c^ about this game and stop the with the hate. It's a great game imo.

Yea, it couldn't be that we actually think the game is bad.....that would disagree with your opinion. I played the game and did not make it beyond the first month, I do not play any other MMO's currently, so much for your theory. They should have just made it a single player game with co-op type play and multi-player hubs like Guild Wars..........oh wait. The only difference? GW did not have a monthly fee.

The problem is even when I had to wait for 20 minute queues the world STILL felt empty due to the design. The only populated areas were fleets and newbie zones at launch.

I've had loads of fun with SWTRO and I haven't even played the game. Watching all the drama and the Biordrone responses was epic around launch, but somehow stupid stuff keeps happening in that game and it keeps entertaining us. It died a glorious lulzy death.

Not surprising really. After all, why would someone settle for the lesser game when you can play WoW with

  • Better instances
  • Functional game mechanics
  • A world that doesnt feel completely dead
  • Proper PvP
  • Faction balance that is not in complete disarray
  • Far more features

Maybe cloning WoW wasnt the best idea.

There is a reason most mmo devs dont bother with voice overs, let alone full voice overs. With that said, SWTOR might become a decent game one day, and if it becomes a decent game, I hope its population goes up. Not all mmos are great at launch.

I think I'm gonna write a new short story.

It's called: "The Rise and Fall of Guild Wars 2".

Look for it when the game launches bro.

The game did launch too early imo. And to be honest it could have been laid out a bit better to push for more grouping and whatnot. That said Bioware has shown that they are going all out with support on this game. I think it's going to be around a long time.

Oh and I'm not a Bioware fan btw. In fact I don't care too much for most their games.

There has been plenty of speculation about the games longevity since its launch, and EA are pushing for heavy updates and all that subscription incentive nonsense in order to incentivize subscribers. Honestly I think it's a bit of a product behind its time in terms of business model - EA have had their eyes on their own large subscription based IP, however the model itself is one gradually on the way out, and sustainable for only a few MMO's, particularly those catering to certain constant niche player base. Seems like SWOTOR had bigger pants to fill, then what it actually was in terms of expectations, oh well, it isn't a bad game at least.

Imagine that, they want to keep people playing. And it's not like Blizzard hands out far more 'substantial' incentives for players to return to WoW.

Aren't there still tons of subscribers? I wonder why so many people are trying to perpetuate the belief that it's in trouble. I mean, clearly it hasn't become the new WoW like EA were hoping for, but it's still huge. With all this negative press though, I bet they will make the move to free to play quickly. Honestly, I'd play it if it were f2p and maybe pay for some unlocks.

i stopped playing tor for the same reason i stopped playing wow....i ran out of things to do...i beat the quest lines(4 friends playing together...kinda nice since i only had to roll bounty hunter and smuggler to see it all) and i beat all the dungeons and raids or whatever they are called...why do i want to keep playing? ive played thru the entirety of the content of the game...the crafting is useless(unless you do the biochem one)...the game is short...only like 2 or 3 weeks to beat it only playing a few hours a day...the ONLY thing better about tor than wow was the questing...it almost tricked me into thinkin i wasnt grinding...but now that ive finished all the story part of the game...why play anymore? i used my free month...and felt bad cause i wasted the 2 month time card i got with it...it suffers from the same problems vanilla wow did...but didnt keep up with the 7 years of patching that wow has...it was a good idea...but if you are gonna rip off wow...at least rip off wotlk or cata wow...that being said...for people who havnt played wow...it seems they really really enjoy tor...its a very simple mmo to get into(especially for a tank...) for those of us who have played wow...or heck...even star wars galaxies (still my fav mmo of all time...pre free jedi class)...it just pales in comparison cause...frankly...it doesnt live up to wow...but how can it when wow has AT LEAST 8 years of production values

I wonder how well SWTOR will do once MoP and GW2 comes out.

If it was, gamespot has his public IP address for both and will ban him for ban dodging.

GummiRaccoon

Yup.

Looking at Skyward's behaviour in this very thread, he acts just like (he did as) Jabby. Assuming he has actually been bandoding though, banning him wouldnt solve anything, he would just create a new alt, and express even more hostility towards other users. The best thing to do would be to simply ignore him.

IF EA is smart, they would transition SWTOR to F2P asap. I seriously feel that the game will be hugely successful if adopts the F2P model (F2P, not pay-2-win). Minority forum whiners aside, the F2P model is hugely successful in the MMO scene. There is a reason why almost everyone is going F2P and the paid sub model s nearly extinct.

To me it seems that SWTOR is just another lets get cash and not provide for the players getting what they paid for.

EA/Origin is doing the same thing on alot of other hyped games that as soon as they get theirs they drop the ball and run.

The concern is not to actually give players what they need but just enough to bleed them dry and for that I do hope SWTOR fails.

The publisher is to blame not the devs really cause they just do what they are told.

I mean for the money they spent to develop and all the marketing, the failure of the product is just sad. Comparing it to other MMO's is wrong it stands or falls on its own.

The competition is great for the money and publishers should know that giving players what they want will keep them coming back,

but for all the input that was put into this it doesn't seem to be reaping the reward that was expected.

If EA supports this product like the others then expect less for what you pay for.

The business model for the response is to go f2p and by the looks of it before 4th quarter returns or come out with a lame expansion

for another $40 that should have been just a patch/update giving what should have been given at release.

A added bonus the pay for in game stuff will be short coming to milk the crap out of the die hard player support base (again for stuff that should be free to subs).

PS Don't kill the messenger

i think its good game, only played for two months but would reconsider starting up again after some updates. Problem is that its story driven, and the end game is a bit lacking.

"STANDARD" feels empty less then 100 on fleet and 5 to 20 on planets, game feels empty, you are fine with the standard population, you are part of the blind fanbase the game already has, and is the reason it is not completely empty yet

To quote a wise man, "Cows go moo, dogs go woof, and MMORPG players go the pvp is unbalanced". This game will have a dedicated following, but won't last long. Bioware just can't into MMO's.

Compare fleet to Stormwind/Orgrimmar. SWTOR just doesn't feel like a massively multiplayer game.

[QUOTE="Advid-Gamer"][QUOTE="SF_KiLLaMaN"][QUOTE="Advid-Gamer"] "STANDARD" feels empty less then 100 on fleet and 5 to 20 on planets, game feels empty, you are fine with the standard population, you are part of the blind fanbase the game already has, and is the reason it is not completely empty yet

You have to be the most negative person on GS. Is there any game you actually like? All I see you do here is b*tch about games.

Just tell it like it is, point out anything in this thread i said that is not true. I have hundreds of hrs in SWTOR I speak from experience, dont agree, I dont care.

It has nothing to do with agreeing with you, I've never even played SWTOR, it's just that I've never seen you post a positive comment on GS.

Compare fleet to Stormwind/Orgrimmar. SWTOR just doesn't feel like a massively multiplayer game.

agreed. My server used to have queue times and in the fleets I'd see about 400 on each faction....after the first month there were about 100 max on the imperial fleet and about 30 on the republic fleet. Most planets were no more than 10 people. The game may have a nice 2mil players, but they are spread far too thin across too many servers

[QUOTE="BSC14"]

[QUOTE="wis3boi"] sadly that's like the only server with a decent population. The others are all emptyAdvid-Gamer

That is not true. There are a lot fo servers that have good populations. In fact most sit and "standard" in the afternoons. That said they do need to do a free transfer to to get rid of the less full ones.

I don't agree at all. I just started an Imperial Agent and I see more people in this game than I did in WoW at lower lvls the last time I started a new toon.
