Ok guys, I'm looking for a new open world rpg to play. I'm talking open world as in games like the Elder Scroll series and Gothic series. I have Morrowind and Oblivion but I've never played any Gothic games.

I can pretty much guess Gothic 3 wont run on my computer(P4 2.4ghz, 1GB RAM, GeForce 6200) so is Gothic 2 still a fun game and possible to get into for someone whos playing games like Oblivion on his PS3?(In terms of graphics etc)

Also, besides not playing the Gothic games can anyone recommend any other open world rpg's that I've missed out on? Thanks in advance.

Have you considered mmo's? They are open world. Not much of a story though. WoW and WAR are both great. I always fancied Two worlds myself but was put off by the bugs i read about.

Yea I've been playing WoW for about 2 years but I'm done with that game. I'm not looking to get into any MMO's for a long while(someday when I invest in a new pc).

Any others?

Gothic 2 is a very good game and definitely worth playing. You might even want to try playing Gothic 1 first. I had some fun with it (played it realatively recently) but had some computer trouble at the same time and never ended up finishing it. You'll miss some story continuity if you jump straight to Gothic 2, but it is not a huge deal if you don't want to play the first game.

I cannot really think of any other open world game (in the way that elder scroll is open) that is worth playing.

you should definitely give Gothic 2 a try. the content isn't as deep and open-ended as G3, but it doesn't suffer from bugs and issues like G3 does.

a reminder: if you are getting G2, be sure to check out the gold edition ( or something like that ) which comes with the expansion Night of the Raven.

Would recommend, if you don't mind retro graphics: !) The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall (a free download from Bethsoft now) and an unknown mid 90's game by Microprose called 'Darklands' an historically based RPG based around the 16th century, so instead of spells you have alchemy and Saint worship. It works on the ingenious basis of 'what the people of Germany in the 15th century believed in will be real in the game, such as witches coverns, bandits, corrupt bishops, devil worshippers, etc. Well worth a look!

Fallout 3 is an excellent open world RPG, though not in a fantasy setting. Game of the Year edition is out now, includes all 5 DLCs.

Although your GPU is below the official minimum requirements, The Witcher should run with some of the eye candy turned off. I think there's a demo floating around if you want to check.

The Witcher is not open world, I don't think the OP was looking for games like this, he wants open world like Oblivion where you can jump and run anywhere.

Ah ok, I never was too sure what to call the Witcher. Either way, it's well worth looking up if TC hasn't already played it.

Its open but not as open as fallout 3, lets just say you can climb up the hills, it has a more "pathy" level design!!!

It's open world, but the missions and where you go for them are pretty straight foward and the fact that you have load up each new section of the world as a level makes it more linear. I'd put it in a non-linear setting, but not quite open world; another one of the things that made Borderlands really different. It's a very difficult game to classify.

It's not really an open world game. Like you say, there are different areas that you must unlock and go through a load screen before entering. But beyond that it is not a living world to explore in any sense. It's more like an open arena to shoot things in.

Good point.

I was about to write and write some more about Gothic 1 and 2, and then I read what you said: the one asking in the first post will most likely never read these answers (the new ones).

BTW: is it not against the rules to bump threads that old?
