no

opening ports is safe

it just allows direct acess through the router without it going through the routers security stuff and such

it wont use up your internet faster

you do have to know which ports to forward

Well opening up ports on your router does take away the protection that NAT provides for your PC, but as long as you've got a firewall then that doesn't particularly matter anyway.

I personally don't see how opening ports will decrease your ping though, normally it's only if you can't connect at all.

Exactly. There shouldn't be a difference in speed and decrease in your PING.

What I do suggest is you portforward instead.

Port forwarding means opening one of the router ports and sending it to one of the inside machines. Port forwarding shouldn't be that great an issue unless you intend to host games. Then outsiders need to find your machine. In any other instance, you start the connection, and your router's NAT table will take care of the redirection for you.

Lag is not a function of whether or not the ports are open, but rather the time it takes for your connection to reach the server.

The best you can do is choose a server with as low a lag as you can. If you can't find one, then apart from maybe choosing another Internet provider, you're probably out of luck--your connection is simply too slow against the Internet at large.

Sort by ping and anything under 75 is probably geographically close to you. Mind you this is assuming you have broadband internet access.

You shouldn't have to open any ports once UPNP is enabled on your router.

If it worked 100% correctly... I've never had a dlink router that did good on the UPNP.

Get a linksys. Never had any problems and there are some very good 3rd party firmware like Tomato.

I'm using a D-Link right now--the WBR-2310. It works without a hitch.
