I'm planning on building a 6 core computer using the AMD Phenom II 6 core CPU, video cards, 1tb drive....

My main purpose is mostly application development with photoshop ui designing. This designing will include me creating animation using Adobe After Effects with some Video Editing for hobby (minor).

I was thinking of water cooling to help keep my system cool, but I"m wondering if I will ever need it? I have a quad core with jsut fans, it runs 24/7 and hasn't hiccuped on me, but that systme is a HTPC. What are your thoughs on water cooling versus fan cooling? Should I invest in water cooling so I can potentially cool all my hardware?

Thanks!

change your print and text color plz..

anywya 1) dont get a phenom II x6 ESPECIALLY with their amd bulldozer fx lineup comign out.. you could end up loosig out on a heck of a bang for your buck (like june 7th is the official word on the street)

second i wouldnt get water cooling as tbh fan cooling does the job jsut fine.. if your super concerned get a good cooling case like say an in-win griffin. antec 900 or haf 922 and then a cpu cooler such as say the hyper 212+ or freezer5 7 pro

Watercooling is only for extreme overclocking.

Now is a really bad time to buy a PII x6. Wait for Bulldozer or get a 2500K.

If this is a business machine then put in basic watercooling and don't OC. What you need is reliability not raw performance, you don't want your system to crash whilst your working in the Summer due to an overclock you thought was stable in Winter.

If you have your heart set on water cooling, go with a Corsair H50 - H70. Its not a true water cooling systerm more of a top of the line CPU sink, however its technically considered "water cooling". It works extremely well though, especially for OC'ing and the H50 onlys ~$80

Just get a good case with good cooling and a decent air cooler. If you get an afermarket CPU cooler they use bigger fans so as well as being much cooler than stock it'll be quieter too.

Don't get a phenom II hex core, either wait till bulldozer is out or go sandy bridge.

GummiRaccoon

this is true, but there are people out there with minor overclocks and a full watercooled system.

Watercooling, if setup right, cna also make a system essentially silent.

My main rig is in the living room and it features 2x GTX 580's in SLI. On air those things howled like twin turbine engines. So I went with a simple watercooling solution and not only are my temps super low (the GPu's used to go as high as 95 C, now they barely touch 54 C) but my system cna co-exist in my living room without disturbing anyone.

However, a good air cooled system can also be very quite. My HTPC is also in my living room, right under my TV, and it's all air cooled, but it features a lower end GPU and a good case so you cna only hear it when you're standing right next to it, and not at all when the TV is on.
