Hey guys, I wanted to get a few opinions on a recent gaming rig that I'm planning to build once I head back to school. Any input would be appreciated! My budget is ~$1100 - $1200. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021 - Case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128359 - Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130339 - Graphics Card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006 - Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017 - Processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220227 - Memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148262 - Hard Drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823126009 - Keyboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009145 - Monitor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104076 - Mouse http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106280 - Optical Drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186134 - Aftermarket CPU Cooler http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100007 - Arctic Silver Thanks for the help. ^ thats better and faster to look :P But I would change that cpu/motherboard to a AMD Phenom 2, no need for an AF cooler ones supplied with cpu is fine unless you plan on major OC'ing.

EDIT - I already have Vista 64 Business and Windows Xp Pro 32-bit (probably gonna run XP)

Basically, I am selling the computer in my Sig to my parents for $500 (not a bad deal in my opinion, pre-built) and I am upgrading. Thus far:

4gb Gskill Ram with ANTEC 300 Case

700w OCZ PSU

XFX 4890

500gb HDD 32mb Cache 7200RPM

Combo Deal for AMD Phenom II 940 BE and Motherboard

Total Price - $680.25 shipped

Masterdj1992

Bought this setup earlier off newegg, should ship within a couple days. Antec 300 has the same cooling as the 900 except the top fan is 140mm not 200mm... Antec 300 also has a removable grill in the front (almost like a netting that catches dust and washable) And it is less pretty but it is in a combo deal for $15 off and $60 less overall before combo. When this computer gets here that will be my second antec 300 case... Recommend putting in 2 more 120mm fans in the front.

Note this does NOT include Operating System, Monitor, Keyboard, or Mouse.

You can get a good 22-24" monitor for $200, OS for $100 bringing total up to about $980.25 shipped (if free shipping on OS and monitor)without keyboard or mouse.

Enjoy!

Yeah, I've got the operating system covered. I'm planning on going with a discounted Windows installation that I can grab from my school.

What do you think of the build I put together? I literally bought that like an hour and a half ago...

It's a really solid build, especially for the price. Due to my situation with some extra peripherals, however, I might not go as overkill on the graphics card :-P I'm looking into some DDR3 1333 RAM right now, so that combo wouldn't do the trick exactly. The monitor does really look nice too :-D

I redid my build with some updates from the above recommendations: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=7172269 What do you guys think? This is using the AMD Phenom II X4 base now, instead of the previous Core 2 Quad.

PSU is not necessary: Get this PSU instead use that one for cheaper (700w) and GET THIS COMBO: Antec 900 and 955 Processor Combo remove the antec 900 and processor(yours is sold out anyway) from your cart and add this combo. Great deal.

OR you could get THIS COMBO which has the Motherboard you picked out and is $80 a processor that is normally $225. Taking the money you save by switching PSU's and applying to the $15 difference between processors.... Man I AM ON A ROLL!!! (sorry I am just owning your prices and finding great deals)

As for RAM, if you are running a 64bit OS, Get 6gb DDR3 just because DDR3 is triple channel that runs best at intervals of 3 (or something like that...)

If any money is left from the savings I put up for you, Spend the extra $20 and get this Video Card (4870 1gb) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150394

Haha, I really do appreciate all the help Masterdj. My only concern is that these deals that we're finding right now might not be valid when I'm actually planning to build the computer (probably more like August / September). I wanted to see what people thought of my hardware configurations and what would be best for my budget before hunkering down and looking more deeply in the next month or two. :P

Swapped out the memory for this one. My only concern is that I'm looking for memory with some decent room to overclock my Phenom II. Also, would AM2+ CPU fans still be able to be used with the AM3 sockets?

If you are talking about a processor Heatsink, I believe the only real difference between AM2+ and AM3 is a couple of internal pins. I believe it will fit but it is dependent on the heatsink itself.

Yeah, I know right now there are only Socket AM2+ compatible heatsinks, but nothing for AM3. If you're talking about difference in pinholes, I don't think there would be too much difference and they would be compatible, but I want to be sure.
