Well, ive come into some disposable income recently, I have that craving to upgrade something, since im going to Uni in 2 weeks time, I was wondering if it was worth upgrading anything now, because it will be unlikely that I would be in this position for the next 3 years again.

Current specs

nvidia 8800 GTS 640

3GB Corsair XMS2 800 mhz ( 2x 1GB and 2x 512MB)

Q6600 2.4 ghz ( Original poorly overclockable )

Creative Audigy Zs2

Gigabyte DS3 motherboard ( no SLI :( ).

Vista Home Premium 64bit

Dual 20 inch Monitors ( 1680 x 1050 )

Any suggestions I could consider?

1) RAM? would i be worth stackig say 2x 2 GB RAM to make 8Gb 800 mhz? Or say investing in DDR3 ram? is it worth it?

2) Sound Card, not sure how good my curret one is, but I was wondering if those £60+ sound cards were worth investing in? I have MEdusa 5.1 Surround sound headset, would I notice the difference in performance ... and well.... amazing sound? can headsets "bottleneck" the effectiveness of soundcards so to speak?

3) GPU, the most noticable peice, my 8800 GTS 640 has done wonders from day 1, the excetion being Crysis (which didnt impress me gameplaywise enough to care anyway ) ... but I Would like STAKLER:Clear Sky maxed and possible potentialy demanding game ike Empire Total War.

I was looking, at the ATI 4570 and 4570x2, and the Nvidia GTX200, and was wondering wether they make THAT much of a difference and can be considered future proof or should I wait?

4) Blu Ray? .... too early?

Thanks

at this point i would say stick with what you got. if anything get yourself a new moniter. that will probably make the biggest difference right now.

Hmmm, I considered a bigger monitor, but I live having 2, for the extended canvas :P , and well, bigger naturally leads to lower framerates as the main resolution is higher.

That and I just bought the second one :P

If Empire: Total War is one of your most wanted games, then go with Nvidia for PhysX.

Yea, considering the GPU, dont fancy switching CPU's atm.

Hmmm, Physx? does it offer new graphical/physics featuers to E:TW or just makes it run better?

On the subject of RAM, it seems RAM has ben stagnant since i upgraded 18 months ago... whats happening with RAM these days... seems rather slow.

if you dont want to get a new CPU then a 4870x2 will help the most for your build. and about the ram if you want to speed it up for free try a program called FreeRAMXPPRO i use it and it helps alot( it manages ram alot better than your os)
