40 to 60 for me. 30 and below give me headaches, that's why sometimes I would turn off some graphical details in exchange for higher framerates.

I think it depends on the game.  Some new engines seem to look good as long as the frames stay above 30 fps most the time, including in action, with only minor dips below that.  An RPG plays better at slower fps compared to a first person shooter.

On the other hand,  a fast shooter like Unreal 2k4 really needs at least 55fps average, or more, hopefully.  assuming you want to compete online.

30 is ok for RTS, 40 for driving.

60+ for standard FPS

100+ for pro quake 3

60 feels good for single player, but for multiplayer like quake, gotta have 90 or more.

Unreal Tournament 2000 (currently playing) works flawlessly with 30 fps. No choppin, no distortion whatsoever. But that is because the graphic requirement of UT is not very high. For Battlefield 2142, 30 fps is not enough, and can really mar the game. So its safe to say that 40 plus fps is the best.

Wow!! Wasn't there an optimal fps to set Q3 at which allowed you to jump higher or increase rocket launch blast through walkways? I seem to remember something like that.
