Orange box help? cause im a noob :(

So i borrowed the orange box CDs from one of my friends , i put the cds in my computer and i installed steam and created a account. But....BUT steam asks for a serial key... and i called my friend and he said there IS no serial key... Can someone help me with this? Is it cause Valve has stuff preventing this ?
