it depends, i love mass effect and will not stand for a bad word to be said against it, but unless it is much cheaper than orange box than orange box will obviously give u value for money, if mass effect is cheaper then buy that
For the price, if you have a slight interest in Half Life, TOB is unbeatable, really. While I prefer playing Mass Effect, when faced off against each other, TOB wins for value.
ME is still an amazing experience, though. Should not be missed.
TOB hands down.
I don't doubt Mass Effects integrity but I have a hard time believing that it can compete with five great games. The Half-Life 2 saga is one of the best series of shooters ever made; Portal is a small compact gem of an FPS; and Team Fortress 2 can be argued as the best multiplayer experience existing right now.
All that for the same price or cheaper then ME, it's no contest IMO.
Mass Effect is only good for the main plot. The Orange Box, on the other hand, is a collection of five outstanding games. HL2 is arguably the best FPS ever made, the two episodes continue the story and give you another 20 hours or so of gameplay, Portal is a very unique game that very few people have anything bad to say about, and TF2 is one of the best multiplayer FPS out there (although granted I could never get into it, apparently everyone else loves it). The Orange Box is quite possibly the best gaming value released in recent memory, if not of all time. You're getting about 65-70 hours of AAA quality gameplay plus however many hours you end up sinking into TF2. Enough said.
If you're concerned about plot, HL2 has a pretty good plot too if you're diligent enough to pick up all the subtle clues the game gives you. I personally like it's method of developing the plot since it's actually realistic. In games like Mass Effect the main character is always given long lectures on basic information that he should already know. While that's convinent for the player it doesn't make much sense in the game. In HL2 though things are never spelled out for you since every character in the game takes it for granted that you would already be well aware of things like a global alien invasion that happened 14 years ago.
Here is where me and gameguy^ differ :P. I can respect Half Life. I did play through HL2 plus the two episodes, had some nice moments... but give me Mass Effect any day. If it were a sole "which single player is better?" question, it's ME all the way. While HL might have nice, subtle clues about the story, ME will ultimately leave you a little more satisfied by story's end. In this way, the storytelling is top notch for ME.
But for me, TF2 really seals the deal though. Without it, I wouldn't give TOB a second look.
[QUOTE="MrWednesday14"][QUOTE="GazaAli"]all i do is walk and shootGazaAli
That's usually what an FPS is about.
but there is no real action in this one.i mean there is no intense battles,or great enemies...etc Really? Have you finished the game yet? The Half-Life series has some of the most intense gunplay I've ever experienced in a video game. If by 'great enemies' you mean bosses then yes Half-Life 2 lacks them in a normal sense but it makes up for it by throwing particularly tough enemies at climatic moments in the game.MASS EFFECT,forget about the orange box,who wants HL,HL2???the game is dam boringGazaAliI hope you're joking. If not you've serious problems.

Horrible horrible lies. Both games are rightfully legends and I still go back any play though the whole lot of them about once a year.

Gordon's muteness is an intentional design aspect of the game, it encourages the player to feel like they actually are Gordon, and it does a damn good job. If the character talked, that illusion is completely shattered.
The characters are fantastic. Half-Life 2 has some of the best, most interesting and well-rounded characters in any game.
The story is really quite good. It's just not immediately obvious what's going on from just playing the game, which is another conscious design decision. As a character, Gordon Freeman just wakes up in this strange place and has no idea where he is or what's going on, so why should the player know? If you want to know what's going on you have to poke around a bit and work it out yourself. This way, the player knows as much as Gordon knows.
Not to mention the excellent control system, the perfect balance between action and problem-solving, and the brilliant level design.
If you're more into RPG's then its mass effect but if you're more into shooters its the Orange Box

this,
and OP wants a game with good story, well, usually, RPG would take the cake, but this time, portal, I mean TOB together would actually.
with ME, Bioware tried too hard to simulate a movie, a Hollywood cliche-filled average flick at that: not high quality enough to be high profile summer film, butneither "bad" enough to be a B movie classicc. a macho guy tearjerker~~
from the box, HL2 however, the cloesest thing to an interactive film: there's no cut scenes, you/Gordon are always inside the filmic situation; all levels/maps are connected together smoothly.
btw, HL2 is part of the shooter trend that does away boss fights. the final battle is intense enough, especially compared to that of ME, which is among the worst-easiest finale battles in the history of RPG~~"
well you all obviosuly love HL2, but i just can't get into the gameGazaAli
well, actually I don't "love" HL2, I've just played many CRPGs that arefar better than ME.
If you want a good collection of games get Orange Box. If you want a bad sci-fi movie with a little gameplay thrown in get Mass Effect.
