OK, so I haven't been keeping up on gaming news as much as I used to, but I'm really interested in Portal and HL2 Episode 2. The thing is, I don't really want to buy the Orange Box because I already have Half-Life 2. Is there any way I can buy just Episode 2 and Portal (and TF2 as well, even though I'll probably never play it) without having to spend $50 on everything related to HL2 which includes things I already paid for?

I've looked on Steam and Valve's website, and it is easily the most confusing website on the planet, so if anyone could help me out I'd appreciate it

You'll be able to buy them al a carte after the 10th apparently, but buying all three by themselves will cost something like $80 total. So you're better off just pre-ordering the Orange box for $45. Then either sell or give away your extra copies of HL2 and Ep1.

uhhh..... isn't there a black box? i thought valve is going to offer a black box that has just HL2 EP2, TF2, and Portal for like 30 or 40 bucks? that's what i was planning on getting. did they get rid of it?

UPDATE:son of a bi.... i guess i've been in no-man's land. i had no idea they canceled the black box. that really pisses me off. what a bunch of money hungry a-holes!

Mate when you buy the OrangeBox you'r getting HL2 and Ep1 free, thats why they did away with the BlackBox i believe.

It might not be totally Valves fault that the Black Box was canned. Apparently alot of retailers like GameStop didn't want to use twice the shelf space, for what amounted to the same game. So they basically told EA to get rid of one of them.

But that said, they could have still offered it over Steam, even though it would have likely still cost $40. I wouldn't have counted on a $30 price tag though, since Ep1 alone was released for $30.

who said they didn't want to play TF2? i sure didn't. what i was getting at was that i thought valve was offering a box that didn't include HL2 and HL2 EP2- two games that most people already have.

and 1005, they aren't offering HL2 and EP1 for free. just the fact that they were originally going to offer a box sans HL2 and EP1 for a cheaper price pretty much proves that.

one other point. proud larry, if you paid $30 for EP1, i'm sorry to say, you paid too much. the first week out they offered it for $20 where i live. target also had a sale on it so i got i for $15. not trying to sound like a prick just pointing out that there should be a black box for cheaper.

I just don't enjoy being berated by 14 year olds, plus I don't like having to download 200 new maps plus every sound effect from Dr. Who just because the admin uses them just to play for ten minutes online

HL2 and Episode 1 are free in the OrangeBox as the OrangeBox itself comes to $44.95 and has 5 games in it, 3 of which are new releases which your paying for. Valve decided to chuck HL2+Ep1 in there aswell because they realised some people wouldn't understand Episode2 without the prior games in the series.

If i remember rightly the BlackBox was going to contain just TF2, Portal and Episode2 and cost the same as the OrangeBox which emphasises that if the BlackBox would of cost as much as the OrangeBox then HL2+Ep1 are thrown in for free. Plus if you actually surf through the STEAM forums about the OrangeBox it was announced there that they decided to chuck both games into the package to let new gamers to the series play them and understand the storyline.

TF2 is nothing like CSS which is pretty much what you described lol. No 14 year olds screaming over voice chat, no custom made maps etc to download and no custom sound effects on servers yet. Your missing out on the years best multiplayer game, you should give it a try!

So buy the PC version and you won't have to worry about that.
