Overheating won't make it lag it'll produce artefacts if it's the GPU or just make it crash if it's anything else.

It can cause it to run slower. The more heat, the more resistance.

As to how to solve it; if you have the laptop on your lap or blanket or couch and it's overheating you can make a simple cooler. Get a hardcover book you don't use anymore, tap/glue it closed so that it won't be stupid later on, and then add 4 supports about 1 1/2cm high on on end of the book (these can be wooden, cardboard....and glued/taped on). Lastly, put your laptop onto the homemade cooler and see where the front rests. At that line put two more supports so that the laptop won't slide off. Hope that was clear 9i did it, and so i described the process). If you are playing on a hard surface alreasy, and it's heating up, either do the same thing but put a fan on the cooler and mod it to be powered by a USB plug, or get a real multi-fan cooler.

Wouldn't increase in electrical resistance just cause power problems?

It will cause a decrease in speed. I've experienced it myself in the past. For some reason, 3DMark will slow down before it artifacts. Also, sometimes the CPU will run slower before it gets errors. I keep everything nice and cool nowadays though....
