I have an amd x2 5000+(not black addition) and i was wondering if this was a cpu worth overcloaking? I have never overclocked any hardware and was wondering what the best way to do it was. I was wondering if overclocking also shortens the life of the cpu and. Also if the cpu fries after a while could damage the other parts in my computer? The dell dimension e521 case and was wonder what speed i should overcloack my cpu to with that kind of ventilation.

By and large it isnt worth doing on that setup. The bios options you have ( or dont have ) coupled with the prebuilt system's notoriously bad or inefficient ventilation coupled with the stock cooler wont net you enough "real world" performance to warrant doing it.

You could try but you will not see a worthy difference and could probably screw something up in the process.

I think your cpu is not worth overclocking, unless you have a Geforce 8800/HD3XXX card. Even then your cpu would handle it.

Im pretty sure the BIOS in a Dell are locked so you can't Overclock.

As far as lifespan , playing with the Voltage too much is what will shorten the lifespan.

overclocking is kinda like having a bag of potato chips, the faster you eat the faster it runs out, the cpu in an overclocked pc is running its life faster than normal, so yes it will shorten life, but usualy if done right it should not be to bad. but if done wrong you kill the cpu and might damage mainboard. also, in a few years when cpu has reached that point it will be time to upgrade anyways...
