just wondering if it was safe to overclock my i3 550 cpu?

my specs are

intel core i3 550 (3.2 ghz, 2 cores, 4 threads)

6 GB ddr3 RAM @ 800mhz

ASUS HD5750 graphics card

Gigabyte H55M-SV2

500 watt PSU

500 GB HDD

i want this build to last me a good 4-5 years so i dont want to damage anything or reduce life at all.

my cpu temp reads 22 c in windows and in the bios it reads around 40-45.

Yea you should be able to overclock it if you have an afermarket cooler.

Don't think it will last 4-5 years though

coller master freezer series umm coolermaster v8, 212+, there are a couple out there.. ooh get a nice fan and get a xigmatek thor's hammer there is another option.. look around at some of the better knowns and find one that runs cool and fits your socket

coolermaster, arctic cooling, thermaltake, scythe are all prime brands to invest some effort into.

personnaly speaking i went with a freezer pro (rev 2.0) which has support for that very socket.. its not ideal for overclocking but it runs really quiet which is what i bought it for.. i hate noise!

i have an i3-530 running at 2.93ghz , 4 gb ddr3 ram at 1333 mhz and a hd 5770 512 mb. What do you expect from your overclock, your ddr3 ram is slower but that's hardly a difference. Your cpu is already running a 3.2 ghz and benchmarks don't show a big difference between the i3-530 and the i3-550. It seems like endangering your system for no reason, you'd better save up for a better videocard or a i5-750 or i5-760. I will upgrade mine with an i5-760 within two weeks not that i actually need it lol. All games i simply max out or run at very high settings. I'm playing on 1280 x 1024 on a 4:3 screen. I would want to upgrade my graphics card to but i'll wait with that . Because you only have a 5750 i would upgrade the graphics card first. If it's for gaming that is. Greetz

im not necacarily going to actuilly overclock, i wanted to know what my limitations might be and the feasability of it all. I dont need to now, but in the future it might roll around. The video card so far runs great, and im not planning on upgrading it as i just got it, the total build cost me 500, postage and all, so im not going to go and spend 2-300 on a card when the one i got cost me 160.
