Please keep all matters regarding overclocking (questions too) in this thread

As i said, ive redone this thread, put in reviews, and im about 85% done with it :)

All-right now, be free to post pics, benchmarks, or whatever you please here, as long as its topic related. You can ask any questions regarding overclocking, and parts in general, some before/after comparisons are welcome as well.So that most of you that are asking for advice on the best parts for Overclocking, il post a few of them here (most of these are recommended by a majority of Gamespot users):

Motherboards:

Intel P35 chipset

Gigabyte P35-DS3L, mainly due its extremely cheap price, and top notch performance, with lots of OC'ing potential, owned by several Gamespot users, that have barely anything negative to say about it.

A quick guide on how to Overclock your CPU/GPU

CPU

My personal favourite way is the old-fashion way: manual bios tweaking, consists of raising the FSB on the motherboard. There are many ways to do this, since there are many different types of BIOS versions

Depending on your type of BIOS, its easier AND tougher to overclock your CPU. An example is a friend of mine who has a dual core Pentium D 3 GHz CPU, on an ASUS motherboard, and i had to go through countless menus to get his CPU up to 3.6 GHz.

There are also software alternatives to Overclock your cpu, like AMD Overdrive

After you get the hang of it, you will be able to overclock any CPU you want, since they are almost all the same, but you can just go around navigating menus till you find what you want (im a lucky one myself, i just went on the advanced section of the bios, pressed enter here and there and voila, 3 ghz)

Its actually pretty easy, the problem is that most (MOST) prebuilt computers have locked multipliers/FSB's (a.k.a. you cant OC)

Good cooling is a MUST because a stock cooler wont cut it, you have to get something like THIS paired up with THIS to get good results

if this didn't clear you out, then HERE's something that might (it IS quite old, but it will surely help)

Some useful software:

cpu-z (download link HERE, on the top left corner)

PC Wizard 2008 (very useful, sure was for me!!)

GPU

For OC'ing your graphics card, there are 2 ways:

1: Do a hack to nvidia control panel, taking like 15 minutes of your time,

OR

2: Using a open-source software (which is MUCH easier)

the software : Riva-Tuner (DL link HERE)

monitoring software PC Wizard, and Gpu-z

Overclocking on Wikipedia

Some tutorial videos (just a warning: none of these are mine):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nr61_MQddEc watch the series of videos from this guy to get an idea of what to do

OVERCLOCKING FAQ

What is overclocking?

Overclocking is the process of increasing the clock frequency of your Central Processing Unit (CPU), Graphical Processing Unit (GPU), Memory or PCI-Express devices. In other words, making your computer run faster without having to spend more money on upgrades.

What are the risks of overclocking?

- In most situations, Overclocking will void the warranty of your equipment

- The lifespan of the CPU and other devices will be shortened.

- - You could potentially destroy your CPU, memory, motherboard, and other expensive items.

- Room temperature is likely to increase

- Your system could become unstable

- You might become an OC Addict (jk)

What is the Front Side Bus (or FSB)?

FSB is also known as the Memory BUS or System BUS and connects the CPU with the main memory and is used to connect to other components within the computer. The FSB can range from speeds of 667MHz, 800MHz, 1066MHz, 1333 MHz, 1600MHz, 2000MHz and beyond.

What is system bus?

The bus that connects the CPU to main memory on the motherboard. I/O buses, which connect the CPU with the systems other components, branch off of the system bus.

What is backside bus?

A microprocessor bus that connects the CPU to a Level 2 cache. Typically, a backside bus runs at a faster clock speed than the frontside bus that connects the CPU to main memory. For example, the Pentium 4 microprocessor actually consists of two chips -- one contains the CPU and the primary cache, and the second contains the secondary cache. A backside bus connects the two chips at the same clock rate as the CPU itself. In contrast, the frontside bus runs at only a fraction of the CPU clock speed.

What is a bus?

Usually a big long yellow thing that carries lots of people around.... err... A Bus is a collection of wires through which data is transmitted from one part of a computer to another. You can think of a bus as a road or highway on which data travels within a computer. When used in reference to personal computers, the term bus usually refers to internal bus. This is a bus that connects all the internal computer components to the CPU and main memory. There's also an expansion bus that enables expansion boards to access the CPU and memory.

All buses consist of two parts -- an address bus and a data bus. The data bus transfers actual data whereas the address bus transfers information about where the data should go.

The size of a bus, known as its width, is important because it determines how much data can be transmitted at one time. For example, a 16-bit bus can transmit 16 bits of data, a 32-bit bus can transmit 32 bits of data, and a 64-bit bus can transmit 64 bits of data. - If your still thinking about the highway analogy, a larger road can allow more cars to travel than a smaller road.

How does FSB determine CPU speed?

CPU speed is determined by the following formula:

FSB x Multiplier = CPU Speed

For example, if you had a FSB setting of 266MHz and a 9x Multiplier, your CPU speed would be 2400MHz or 2.40GHz for example.

I wold like to thank Overclock3d.com for this Overclocking FAQ, wich i edited myself

Much more improvement than the previous guide, however,I've noticed a slight mistake in the motherboard section ,when you mentioned the p45 motherboards, the asus maximus formula is using an x38 chipset not a p45,and the newegg link was for the asus maximus 2 formula which is the p45 so you need to change the picture and the name of the mother board and adjust the rest of the links, good job anyway

My old rig had an x2 3600 and I used an Arctic Cooler 64. I OCed it from 1.8 Ghz to 2.4 Ghz and had it there until I bought the new rig in the sig a few months back.

Now I have my e2160 cooled by a Arctic Freezer 7 Pro from 1.8 Ghz stock to 2.8 Ghz OCed. I had it stable at 3.0 Ghz and 3.1 Ghz for about a month, but then it would randomly start erroring out. I have it at 2.8 Ghz because at this point, I really don't need anything higher. Plus, I needed to massively add voltage for anything above 2.8. To get from 2.8 to 3.0 Ghz, I had to go from 3.325 volts all the way almost to 4 volts (or was it 4.325 to 5, pretty sure it is the first).

Either way, a 1.0 Ghz OC is plenty good if you ask me. I am happy with it and it will last me until I finally decide to get a faster dual core or a quad core. I don't like the 1 mb of L2 cache, but don't have the means to get a new one right now. Plus, it plays all the games I play maxed out....so why bother.

With my stock cooling my CPU can go up to 3.8Ghz but it smells funny (burnt) so I keep it at 3.4Ghz.

My GPU can score a core clock of 835mhz (800mhz stock) and 715mhz memory clock (700mhz stock) before screwing up.

I know i'm asking quite alot of questions here, but... here comes another one.

Which one is better? They have a $20 price difference, which one is the best bang for the buck? Also, it has to be overclock-able.

G. SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) $44

OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) $20 after mail-in rebate

Great thread! Still needs a little work and some tidying, but otherwise very nice

Ive got my Pentium D 915 2.8ghz running at 4Ghz stable on an AC freezer 7 pro, so i can personally reccommend that cooler. Reckon it could go higher as well, but no need for that atm, and it runs a bit hot to be pushing it further.

Not to be picky or anything, but why exactly did you get a Pentium D? Which one is it?

id recommend the gskill if it werent for the price (u can see in the memory section of the guide, ive OC'd them myself (i was given a pair of those as a replacement while my other ones didnt arrive) and theyve gone up to almost 1100 mhz, but the OCZ will go up to 960 or so, neither are bad, but price wise, get OCZ

im almost finished with the overall content, il tidy it up after im done :)

and wow, pentiums are real beasts when it comes to OC arent they? btw, u prolly kno this already, but a E2180 @ 2.7 is quite a bit better than urs... but urs gets away with it simply cuz of the fact that its at 4 ghz (well, duh)

he prolly had it before he got the pc... and thats one of the netburst (aka crappy) D's, but with THAT increase in the clock, i think its not so crappy anymore...

Something is wrong with your processor. You shouldnt be getting 50 at idle, more like 35 to 40c. Did you place the cooler correctly? How much thermal compound did you use?

I was wondering; when I used to OC my P4 30% (3.9Ghz), I would fit a average of 70-80 degrees Celsius. Knowing that's not so high, why the hell did it smell like burnt corpse after two hours of playing Crysis?

I'm using the stock cooler from my P4 1.8Ghz and no thermal paste.

I have an ASUS P5E X38 and an E2180 w/ an Intel Quad HSF. I've gotten it to 2.75GHz (1.272 Vcore) by adjusting nothing but the external clock speed. That's not really all that much of a feat, but I'm using the cheapest 1GB sticks of memory that money can buy! I think I'll stop here till I get some better RAM . . .

Anyone an expert on Lapping? Does it really help or no?

Thermal compound question...many different ways of applying it. I use a razorblade to put a thin coating across the entire surface, how about you?

I'm currently using a zalman 9500, and it's "OK", but doesn't seem to be anything special. I've heard the Tuniq Tower is really good, has anyone tried Thermal Electric cooling? See link http://www.xoxide.com/ultra-chilltech-cpu-cooler.html?productid=ultra-chilltech-cpu-cooler&channelid=FROOG
