Hi, I'm going to overclock my Q6600 cpu, when it arrives next week, and i would like to know if it's better to keep a 1:1 ratio with the RAM. Because i can either set my FSB to 400mhz and a x8 multiplier (thus having 1:1 with RAM speed and a clock speed of 3.2Ghz) or have the FSB @ 333mhz and a x9 multiplier, then slow the RAM down to 667 speeds and tighten up the timings, this would give me a clock speed of 3.0Ghz.

Specs: Q6600, mobo: GA-P35C-DS3R, RAM: Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 5-5-5-12 (@1.9V) and a Zalman 9700NT cooler.

Also, would i see a drastic decrease in life expectancy of my cpu if it's @3.2, cos I'm pretty sure I'd have to raise the voltage.

Hope that makes sense :)

Thanks, WhOOmpa260

Hey I'm building a rig very similar to you. After you overclock would you mind sending me the steps you took in a message? I would really appreciate it.

Why would you try to overclock a quadcore, that CPU does not need to be overclocked, its too good.

Yeah, it is my first overclock though. I'm going to follow a few guides that ive found.

and deniiiii21, the Q6600 may have 4 cores but 2.4Ghz is a realtively low clock speed and other dual core cpus beat it in quiet a few games and applications, this is because some applications rely more on higher clock speeds than amount of cores(actually a lot of applications do).

BTW Koinuboy, this is the rest of my rig:

Antec 900 case, Inno3D 8800GTS 320mb OC (570/1800), Seagate 320mb SATAII harddrive, Pioneer black DVD/RW (SATA), Antec Trio 550W (42A on the +12V).

We have the same CPU, case, cooler, and our RAM runs the same. We fit pretty well. Can you give me links to the guides you found?

Yep, sure:

The last one is a good website, where there are plenty more guides and help if something goes wrong.

Well i'd go for the first way ... keep 1:1 and push the CPU to 3.2Ghz (faster is always better) ... lifespan wise - try not to go above 1.35V .. and keep an eye on your temps (use Intel's TAT (Thermal Analysis Tool) when you stress test - about 65°C isn't all that great
