I have a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P and I'm trying to overclock Q6600 to 3.00GHz. I set the Bus speed at 333 with a multiplier of 9x, now the problem is, when I open CPU-Z the multiplier says 6x (2GHz) and will jump up every other minute for about 2 seconds to a 9x multiplier. Is it CPU-Z that is making this mistake or is my set up wrong?

You have speedstep enabled in the bios. It puts the cpu into a low power state when not being stressed. Go into advanced settings in your bios and disable c1e and eist.

Yeah, it's ok, it'll go up to 3.0ghz when it needs it. Are you using orthos or prime95 to test the stability of your overclock?

Ok, when you're using prime95 to stress, check out cpu-z to see the multiplier go to 9.

You should stress with prime95 for a few hours, atleast. There isn't a set time really, but I've actually gotten prime errors after 12 hours of stressing. Check out this guide for any help.

Stock cooler. Check your temps when running prim95. I bet they are well over 65C on the cores. I would't overclock until you get some proper cooling.

No he shouldn't. I did some tests with stock cooler and the cores hit 90C after a few minutes at 3Ghz

yea, overclocking with stock coolers can be bad news, the stock coolers typically come with the cpu if it was a boxed retail version but regardless, the stock coolers aren't made for high temps like some other ones are. i've had my q6600 overclocked since the first day i got it, just because i could, but i also don't use a stock cooler, i sold that. depending on how hard you want to push the cpu will help determine how good of a cooler you'd need for it. also keep in mind, sometimes even if a motherboard says it can adjust the cpu a certain way doesn't always mean it will do it and work properly. i don't know if your motherboard's bios has the features or not but in mine i overclock my cpu and memory separately for better reliability.

Max temp I hit after crysis for 5 hours was 75c after which it goes down to 40-50c. I ordered a cooler(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835154001) the other day and I am just waiting on it. I will be pushing to 3.6GHz after that.

That's too hot. Crysis doesn't even stress the Q6600 out like prime95 would. It's possible go to 90C with prime95 mine did for the few minutes I tryed.Cores over 65C is not so good I believe. As above says reduces you clock until you get a good cooler for overclocking.

You can leave it at 3.0ghz, just don't keep it like that too long :)
