Hey, I recently overclocked my q9550 from stock 2.8ghz gradually up to 4.0ghz. its runnin smooth and stable, never gets above 40c under load, and "system temp" of mobo never gets above 50c. but when i go into my bios it says the multiplier is 6, not the 8 that i set it to... and my EasyTune softwear says its 6 as well... idk. its stable and when i boot it up my POST screen shows "intel q9550 @4.00ghz". I think it IS at 4.0, just not showing it anywhere else, what could be causing this? thanks

My Specs:

EVGA GTX295 gpu

Intel q9550 quadcore @ 4.0 ghz

8GB Corsair Dominator DDR2 1066 RAM

Gigabyte EP45-UD3P mobo

Creative Fatal1ty X-Fi Sound Blaster

Kingwin 1000w modular psu

Freezer 7 Pro cpu cooler

ScanDisk DVD drive

Xeon LCD temp sensor/fan controller

All-in-One media card reader

Antec 1200 case

Logitech G15 Kerboard

Logitech G7 Mouse

Logitech z5500 5.1 Speakers

Logitech Desktop Microphone

Intel Speedstep should be what is it, you see it lowers the multiplier when the cpu is idle, to save power, and improve the longevity of the cpu itself, you can turn this feature off in the bios, so it's running at 4Ghz all the time, but you will find it will pump up to 4Ghz, with the 8x multiplier when running resource intensive applications and games.

Check with CPU-Z when running prime95, and how did you measure load? Make sure to run prime95 to check if its stable or not. How are you maintaining that low temperatures @ 4GHz? My temperatures @ load(4 hours of prime95) reached 70C when I'm at 3.95. Surely Freezer 7 Pro ain't that better than OCZ Vendetta 2.

um well i dont have prime 95, or any official testing softwear lol. i just run Crysis at max high settings for 4-6hours on end, and the temp never rises above low 40s c. i use my Hardwar Monitor softwear that came with my mobo, and i think its pretty accurate. also my case cpu temperature monitor reports the same. no crashes, nothin. no different than when i ran it at stock.

Just download Prime95, CPUz and HWMonitor/CoreTemp and perform testing with them(All of them are free software). Crysis is not that CPU intensive then it is GPU intensive, it is a crap method to test the stability of your CPU.

Also disable "spread spectrum," if your motherboard didn't automatically...

ok, downloaded them all, and have been running prime95 for 3 hours so far, passed all self tests, stable as i can see. core temps ARE higher, around 65c. but CPUz, HWmonitor, and CoreTemp all say that im running witha multiplier of 6, instead of the 8 i set it to. shouldnt they say im runnin at the full 8 during the stress test??
