i purchased a comp over a year ago at ibuypower--i have a warranty on labor but not parts. my comp would not start (one beep, pause with three quick beeps), so I did a RMA back to ibuypower. they said it was a faulty graphics card and I purchased a new gtx570 that they installed. they SUPPOSEDLY tested, then sent it back to me, but it was DOA.

When i turned it on, i saw the ASUS motherboard screen, but then the screen went blank (black screen), then the comp just turns off. I pushed DEL and looked at the BIOS - temp at 180 degrees farentheit; also saw an error saying my comp was overheating. I called ibuypower and they said it was bc my V8 cooler was loose (he said they should have put protective foam wrapping inside the comp when they returned it, but there was none). Ihired a tech guy who screwed the coolermaster V8 tightly onto the mount. BUt the comp still has the same problem (143 degrees now).

1) what should I demand that ibuypower do at this point? ask for a new computer for free? they will say the parts aren't under warranty and i will probably have to send it back RMA, but the tech guy said that they clearly did NOT test the comp before sending back to me. Also i need a comp soon and don't want to continue waiting for it to be fixed forever.

2) What is the problem with the overheating? Do i need a new CPU? A new cooler? (I have a i7 920. If I buy a new one and have the tech guy install it, does the cooler come with it, or do i have to buy separately). Need a new motherboard? I want to know for SURE so i don't have to buy all these products and test each out separately.

3) I now have a new expensive graphics card. also i want to keep all my files. better to have the tech guy build a new comp for me with most of my old parts? what parts can i keep and what will i need to buy from new egg?

thanks!

1) they practically admitted they were wrong by not securing your cooler so if you want you could let them fix it.

2) if it's your cpu overheating then yeah, it's probably the cooler not placed correctly. you can't just screw it tighter to fix it cause the thermal paste will have been disrupted already. it is applied as a liquid and hardens over time and is what allows for good transfer of heat between the cpu's heat spreader and the cooling block. you're going to have to remove the cooler, clean off the thermal paste, apply new paste and put it back in position. this is not very hard to do and doesn't take that long so i would try this if i were you as it is your best bet of quickly having a working pc and all you need to do is purchase some thermal paste (there might even be left over paste that came with your pc) and google for some step by step guides or check your manual.

3) this seems like a last resort option as it will cost you the most and there is nothing to draw definite conclusions about the parts you have being faulty. don't hire any guys, if you don't trust yourself let ibuypower fix it, otherwise have a go at it yourself.

good luck :)

It could be possible they either didn't apply enough thermal paste (unlikely) or in their infinite wisdom applied way to much (more than likely). I would recommend purchasing thisand also thermal paste of your choosing, artic silver works fine, since more than likely ibuycheap used the generic stuff (blahhh!). Then either remove and apply thermal paste yourself, which really isn't hard, or hire that same tech to do it for you. Hope that helps

A carte blanche for screwing customers. You can return the video card that you bought, apart from that I don't get anything but trouble from further dealigs with them.

it seems people think it's a thermal paste problem. is there a possibility its a broken i7 920 or the V8 and that I need a new one?

if i get a new i7 920 with that graphics card noted above, do i need to buy a separate V8 or liquid cooling, or is the fan that automatically comes with the i7 920 enough?

There shouldnt be any issue with your Cpu or V8. its a thermal paste iue most likely. Just clean off the old and reapply new.

It may be your V8's power connector isn't connected to the motherboard fan header. A stupid mistake I have also made by not connecting my Corsair H50 Pump to the motherboard fan header. Fortunately nothing was damaged :P

The V8 has enough surface area with heatpipes to run an i7 passively. So I doubt its the fannot working. A review has shown with prime 95 a I7 920 never reached beyond 75C with a V8 with the fan off . Its ethier a loose cooler and or the thermal paste lost it's seal after working on the Pc.
