my computer has been shutting down lately while trying to play taxing games ( cod4 , crysis after 2 minutes)

my temperature ratings on bios right after a shutdown are : cpu 51 C board 40C MCP ( what is this!?) 70 -73 C ( HOT HOT HOT)

i have an antec 900 case. i tried in bios changing all fan settings from auto to 100% load at all times to try to get things cooler, i even put a mini room cooling fan right next to my side panel and the lowest ive seen MCP at is 68-69 C ( still boiling ?)

so i have my antec with stock fans, Q9300, sli 9800gtx's , 4gigs of corsair ram, nvidia 780i sli mobo , 2 WD SE caviars 500 gigs in raid 0 , OCZ ModXStream OCZ780MXS 780W PSU , everything stock no OC'ing.

its like 100 degrees here in cali right now, the house is 84, this problem started earlier this week, coinsidently after getting nvidia's new beta drivers, but now that theyre finalized and i updated to those the problem still exists.

id rly like to know what MCP is and why mine is ON FIRE, would an extra fan be a solution?

opinions...

thx

I used to have the same problem and what I did is I cleaned the cpu cooling fan, it had alot of dust on the cpu cooling fan so once I cleaned the cpu cooling fan it was working fine again. See if the cpu cooling fan has dust and if so then just remove the dust from the cpu cooling fan.

Thats definately odd, my guess would be that you need to re-seat the CPU cooler and make sure you use a thermal compound.

I believe the MCP temp is the fan on your motherboard. I wouldn't actually recommend putting a fan next to your side panel because most of the time, you'll just be blowing back the hot air. If you want that fan method to work, you'll need to take off your side panel and just aim an actual fan into your computer. That's what I did for a good 5 months until I got a proper cooling system =P

The problem could be related to you not having enough cooling power for your computer. I'd suggest finding a video card fan add-on if your video card doesn't already have a fan on it.

And, as Pirvate Adam already said. Clean the dust from your system. It acts like a blanket, insulating the cool air.

i have stock evga 9800gtx's ( 2) pretty sure they got fans on them.

are you guys sure it might not be my ram overheating ? i'm just confused because my cpu temperature seems to be not that bad, MCP is whats hot, and what exactly happens is that either my video will die out or my computer will completely shutdown.

i dont have a zalman fan / heatsink on my cpu, would that be reccomended to get for my condition? also maybee another fan somewhere in the less cooled area's of my comp ( ram area)

i can take a pic of my comp to show fans and airflow.

what kind of motherboard do u have? evga, xfx, gigabyte, etc...?

MCP is the chipset. you're chipset heatsink might not be seated properly. try reinstalling the heatsink

ok so i got pics! but first of all, i opened up my case and noticed the people that made my computer did a couple stupid things

1. they left the piece of plastic that covers GPU's when u take them outa the box somewhat on my bottom 9800gtx and it was pretty much covering the fan

2. they didnt ( as u can see in the pictures ) put the motherboard heatsink fan on. i just did it myself ( soo hard, took like 15 minutes)

pics -

1. side view of full comp

2. top half

3. bottom half

http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q270/afflictor/IMG_0072.jpg

4.motherboard heatsink fan i put on

http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q270/afflictor/IMG_0073.jpg

after i took the piece of plastic off and put the fan on, i ran crysis for about 1:30 hours, restarted and looked at the temp in bios, MCP is 63 degrees, so about 10C less after being in full load for an hour, seems much better than 70-74 degrees idle :P
